The Fabulous Bakin' Boys Limited Edition Spooky Cupcakes review

Ghosts and ghouls aren't the only thing putting in an appearance for Halloween - if you're eagle-eyed, you may have spotted some spooky Halloween cupcakes on the supermarket shelves from the Fabulous Bakin' Boys. They come in two fang-tastic (groan!) flavours - Blackcurrant & Apple and the very apt Chocolate & Blood Orange. We received a pack of the latter to review.

Now I have to say, these arrived in the post so they'd been a bit squished. The ones you buy in the supermarket will be in much better nick ! That didn't put us off sampling them though and we all thought they were very tasty. The orange flavour topping reminds me of the taste of the inside of Orange Viscount biscuits (remember those ?!) or Orange Club biscuits and we were all surprised by how soft and squidgy the icing is. It's got the texture of butter icing on homemade cupcakes rather than the rather hard icing you often get on shop-bought ones. The chocolate sponge is perfectly crumbly and very light and airy. It's also not soo sweet, nicely balancing out the sweetness of the icing.

Another great marketing point is the packaging. Each cake is individually wrapped in a plastic sachet (perfect for transporting it in your handbag without getting crumbs everywhere) but more importantly, as far as the girls were concerned, each sachet has a challenge on it.

Sophie's "dare" was to eat a cupcake off the back of her hand, so both of my mini-testers rose to the challenge.

Another one was to try juggling cupcakes or see if you could eat the cake without the topping. In keeping with the Halloween theme, you can try the "tricks" before eating your "treats" ! There is actually a competition on the Fabulous Bakin' Boys facebook page (here) where you can upload pictures of you trying the tricks to win your height in cakes too - yum !

The Spooky Cupcakes are not only delicious, they contain only natural colours and flavours. They are baked in a nut-free bakery which is reassuring for anyone with allergies too. The manufacturers say that "in taste trials, 90% of kids wanted more, more, more" and the Madhouse mini-reviewers certainly follow the trend.
