Warburtons Hi-Taste Lo-Fat 2-week Eating Plan Snack recipe : French Toast with Cinnamon & Berries



Of all the recipes in the Warburtons Hi-Taste Lo-Fat 2-week Eating Plan, I have to say this is the one that appeals to me the most. Even better news is that two slices of  Warburtons Fruit Loaf  with Orange provide one  of your 5-a-day - how cool is that ?!



The  orange  in  the fruit  loaf  compliments  the  cinnamon  flavour  really  well.

Makes: About 8  slices 
Takes  about  5  minutes  to  make  and  8  minutes  to  cook

Ingredients
  1. 2 free range eggs
  2. 2 tbsp semi skimmed milk
  3. About 1-2 tsp vegetable oil
  4. About 5g small piece low fat butter
  5. 8 slices Warburtons Fruit Loaf with Orange
  6. A pinch of ground cinnamon
  7. About 3 tsp small sprinkling of sugar
  8. 4 handfuls fresh cherries or berries or other fruit, to serve
  1. Directions
  2. 1. Crack the eggs into a bowl, add the milk and mix with a fork
  3. 2. Heat the oil and butter in a frying pan
  4. 3. Dip a slice of the Warburtons fruit loaf with orange into the egg mixture and put it straight into the pan, depending on the size of the pan you should fit 3 or 4 slices in the pan at one time. Cook for 2 -3 minutes on each side or until cooked and golden
  5. 4. Repeat with the rest of the bread and egg mixture. 
  6. 5. Cut each slice of French Toast in half, sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar and serve with fresh cherries or other fruit

Vanish Oxi Action Fabric Stain Remover review


You may remember, just before the Jubilee celebrations, I told you that Sophie was gutted because she'd had a nosebleed on her Union Jack cushion and Vanish offered to send through some Stain Remover products. They sent me two Oxi Action products, the Fabric Stain Remover Powder on the left and the Oxi Action Crystal White Gel which promises to keep your whites whiter as well as removing stains.


Well, with three under elevens, I didn't have to wait long to have some stains to test it on. Sophie came home from art club with these mysterious black stains all over her trousers. We couldn't actually work out what it was - marker pen, ink or black paint maybe?


As the stains looked like they'd be difficult to budge, I started off by applying a small amount of gel directly on them.


I rubbed it in with a little water to make it foam up a bit, then shoved them in the machine with the rest of the load, adding a dose of gel to the machine.



This is how it came out. Slightly paler and the brownish tinge around the edge of each stain where it had "bled" has disappeared, but the stains are certainly still there. Hmmm.


OK, time for a more easily identifiable stain. Sorry for any non-parents reading this who might be a bit squeamish about poo but this is what happens when your toddler has an upset stomach and his night time nappy can't cope ! Lovely !


I made the pyjamas wet, poured over a little gel and squished it into the fabric a bit.


That already got rid of quite a lot of the stain actually but there were still visible brown marks on the fabric. Time to throw it in the machine and cross fingers.


I decided to do a test by also washing the changing mat cover, also with a poo stain on it (from the same leaky nappy, for a fair test), without pretreating it with Vanish.


I was quite impressed to see that most of the stain actually came out even without the Vanish, but you can still see a slight mark if you look closely. I did have to compare with the top photo because I couldn't remember where the stain was, which shows that it's pretty clean.


The pyjamas are also pretty clean - much better than I expected - but if you look closely, you can see some slight brownish discolouration still on the fabric.

So I'm not sure really. The Vanish products do seem to get some stubborn stains out, but certainly not all of them, as the first test showed (they don't claim to remove ALL stains, just 101 of them - there's probably a list somewhere), and the "placebo" test with the changing mat cover shows that even without the extra boost from the Vanish, it came out quite clean anyway.

I'll need to keep experimenting as new stains come up to see what it can and can't deal with. I'd love to know how you've got on with it if you've tried it.

"Mummy’s Lump" free e-book to explain Mummy's breast cancer



Breast Cancer Care has launched a free eBook edition of one of its key award-winning support publications, Mummy’s Lump, narrated by actress ZoĆ« Wanamaker. Mummy’s Lump is a picture book which helps parents with children under seven explain what is happening when their mother is diagnosed with breast cancer.  Over 18,000 copies of the award-winning illustrated book have been distributed since its launch in 2008. 

In response to the growing popularity of eBooks, Breast Cancer Care has collaborated with eBook Partnership, with funding from the Ashley Charitable Trust, to transfer Mummy’s Lump to an electronic format, downloadable for free from iTunes. You can still order a free hardcopy from their website though, if you're not equipped to read an e-book.


I really hope this is something that none of you will ever need. I've never been diagnosed with breast cancer but I do remember when we had our "angel baby" and the first question I asked the counsellor at the hospital was "what do I tell the kids?". When your head is totally taken up with trying to come to terms with things yourself, you just don't have the resources left to work out how to explain things to young children in the way they need, especially as they generally understand more than you think about what is going on.

As the UK’s leading breast cancer support charity since 1973, Breast Cancer Care knows that telling children about a breast cancer diagnosis can be difficult and distressing, and parents need support.  Mummy’s Lump was therefore developed with Gillian Forrest, Consultant Child Psychiatrist and Senior Research Fellow at Oxford University, whose research with over 30 mothers with early breast cancer and their children showed that the youngest children had a much greater awareness of cancer than parents realised. 

Gillian, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1990 when her children were five and seven, said: "Despite being an experienced child psychiatrist, when I got my own breast cancer diagnosis I was anxious and unsure about what to tell my children.  All the support I got focused on my own health - there was little available to help deal with my children’s needs.  In the end I told them that I had a bad lump that had to be taken out. The clear message from my research was that no matter how much children had been told, they knew something ‘bad’ was going on.  They’re exposed to lots of information about breast cancer in ways we don’t really appreciate, but the more they are prepared and informed, the more it helps them cope.  It can be easier for parents to broach something as sensitive as a cancer diagnosis through a story rather than a conversation so I wrote Mummy’s Lump just like a normal story book.  Now, as a narrated eBook there should be even fewer barriers to being open with children about a breast cancer diagnosis."

Lilly's Eco Clean Concentrated Floor Cleaner review


I love the idea of green cleaning products, but they do also have to be efficient for them to be adopted here at The Madhouse. When I was given the choice of product in Lilly's Eco Clean range, I went for the Concentrated Floor Cleaner (and the Degreaser, which will be reviewed in another blogpost). With three kids and two dogs, our very pale grey flooring is always in a right state so I was keen to see if an environmenally-friendly product would be able to cope. 

I love the story of how the range came to be. Big Green Smile, who sent me through the samples, explain : "Lilly's Eco Clean products are a new range to Big Green Smile. After the owner Lilli Klint became ill, she decided to detoxify her life and created the concept of an eco-friendly contract cleaning business. She began to look for alternatives, searched out old recipes for cleaning agents derived from plant and vegetable-based materials. That led her to experiment with making her own cleaners for the business in her kitchen. They had to be effective and smell pleasant. She chose a range of delicious essential oils for her products, not only because they make the cleaning feel like a dance in a park, but also for their different antiseptic and antibacterial properties. The products include orange oil floor cleaner, eucalyptus spray cleaner, tea tree toilet cleaner and lemongrass degreaser and range from £2.49 to £8.90."

The list of advantages is quite lengthy :

Right,time to get floor washing !  When I took the lid off and sniffed, there was a gorgeous natural orange smell. You can tell this is fragranced with real orange oil rather than synthetic fragrances. It's concentrated so you only need a small capful in a bucket of water. (I even treated myself to a brand new mop and bucket !)
Once it's diluted, it still smells delicately of oranges but I was disappointed to see that the smell totally disappeared once the floor had been cleaned and dried. I'm used to walking into a room after I've mopped the floor with my regular, non-green cleaner and having a lovely strong fragrance signal to the whole world (or at least Madhouse Daddy Mike when he gets home from work!) that the floor cleaner has been out.

The lack of fragrance is the only niggle though. It cut through the grime, including muddy pawprints, sticky handprints and spilt chocolate milk, with absolutely no effort and left the floor perfectly clean. I got the impression that it dried quicker than my usual product, but that could be down to the new mop too.

If the lovely orange fragrance was a bit stronger and lingered more after cleaning, it would have got 5/5 !

Kids app review : Bob the Builder’s Playtime Fun


When we were asked if we'd like to review new kids' app Bob the Builder’s Playtime Fun, I was surprised to learn that this is the first time he has his own app. Loads of other preschool heroes have been used to create fun apps - we've already reviewed apps featuring Postman Pat, Guess With Jess, Fireman Sam, Waybuloo, Franklin, Tinga Tinga Tales, and probably many more I can't remember right now - so it was about time Bob The Builder got one too !

The app offers several mini games, which always makes it really good value because the kids will get bored of it less quickly. Both 3-year-old Pierre and 7-year-old Juliette have been playing with it non-stop since I downloaded it and they still look totally absorbed by the games when they play.

You have the choice between :


Clean the Can Do Crew – Can you clean it? Bob the Builder’s machine wash has broken down and needs fixing.  Can you help wash and hose down his muddy crew?


  Mix and Paint – Can you mix it? Mix the colours together to create the perfect palette and paint your favourite characters. 


Memory Game – Remember the location of the character cards to match all the pairs.


Sticker Book – collect stickers throughout the games to decorate a various Bob the Builder scenes within a sticker book.

Who Is It? – How well do you know the Can Do Crew? Match the characters to their shadows.

Picture Puzzle – Complete the puzzle by connecting the pieces to create scenes from the TV show.

The games are quite varied and simple enough for toddlers to jump straight in and play by themselves. Can you play it? Yes, you can - even without any help from Mum !

MU Caterpillar Sandwich - A monster of a sandwich to keep the kids entertained




If you're a regular follower of my blog, you'll know that I love making fun food for the kids. The Madhouse Mouse Pizza and Tortoise Pittas are now legendary ! I therefore absolutely LOVE this caterpillar sandwich idea and I think it would be brilliant for kids' birthday parties or summer picnics.

MU Caterpillar Sandwich

A monster of a sandwich to keep the kids entertained


Makes 1 


Ingredients

1 loaf of brown bread
1 apple
2 olives (eyes)
½ cucumber (feet)
½ vanilla pod (for the ears)
MU Patz
Egg mayonnaise/Ham
Lettuce leaf for the caterpillar to eat


Method


1. Make sandwiches from the egg mayonnaise and layer with a MU Patz slice (your favourite fillings can also be used other than egg mayonaise)

2. Cut them out with a round cutter (this will make the body of the caterpillar)

3. Cut the cucumber into ¼ slices (this will make the legs)

4. Cut the apple in half from top to bottom and decorate with a smiley face using vanilla pods, olives and red pepper

5. Arrange the cut sandwiches on a plate and then place the cucumber legs at the base of each sandwich

6. Finish with the face and a garnish of lettuce

Ideal for a picnic or party

 Simple Mu Ham and Pineapple Tortilla Pizza

1 tortilla wrap
Mu Patz
2 slices ham, chopped
1 round piece of pineapple, chopped


Method  


Decorate with MU Patz


Scatter the toppings over the tortilla 



Transfer to a baking tray and bake in an oven preheated to 180C for 5-10 minutes, until the cheese has melted.

My Tots 100 Book Club Choice : Kathy Lette - Foetal Attraction


The Tots100 Book Club is where bloggers share their favourite stories. Every month, the Tots100 invites 10 bloggers to tell everyone about stories that have moved and inspired them – and to share their favourite book with another blogger. Each month, they publish a round-up of the Book Club’s recommendations over on the Tots100 site, meaning you need never be short of great reading inspiration again!


I was delighted when, back in May, the lovely Alison from Dragons & Fairydust chose me to receive her favourite book, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I have a vague recollection of reading this as a child and I think Sophie will love it so I can't wait to share it with her. Thanks Ali !

Now it's my turn to share my favourite book, and to choose a blogger to share it with. Narrowing it down to one book was actually really hard because I read so much, but in the end I went for my favourite feel-good author, Kathy Lette. I love the fact that she picks all the key traumatic and stressful moments in a woman's life, be that marriage, pregnancy or being a new mum, and relates all those things that seemed really horrific and capable of reducing you to tears in such a way that you'll be howling with laughter. She takes all those unmentionable little things that nobody ever warned you about and shouts them from the rooftops so you get a real sense of girlie solidarity. Not only you know you're not the only one to go through the things that she writes about, she'll also make you laugh about them so it somehow doesn't feel so bad !






I had a look through the Tesco Books website and couldn't find Mad Cows, which follows the trials and tribulations of a new mum, so I went instead for Foetal Attraction. The synopsis says : "Madeline Wolfe is a mischievous, mutinous, high-rise Aussie redhead, who can open beer bottles with her teeth and is on first name terms with every bartender in Bangkok. So how come she's ended up twelve thousand miles from home, in rainy London, with no friends, her visa about to expire, with no place to live - oh, yes, and pregnant?"

I know a flurry of lovely bloggers who have just had babies (which is why I instantly thought of Mad Cows) but I'm sure they'll still remember enough of their pregnancy to appreciate the incisive wit and humour of the book, so I nominate Emma who blogs at Mellow Mummy (currently in the middle of a huge roadtrip across Europe with a toddler and a baby - maybe Jack Kerouac's On The Road would have been a better choice, thinking about it!)

Wagamama spicy chilli, coriander and ginger dressing review


The sunny weather is finally here - woohoo ! But it may not stay for very long so we're making the most of it and packing in as many barbecues and salads as possible. This has therefore been the perfect time for trying out the bottle of Wagamama Spicy Chilli, Coriander and Ginger Dressing that we were sent to review.

I knew that Wagamama was a Japanese-themed restaurant chain, but I've often wondered where the name came from. It always makes me think of WAGs and mammas so I have visions of footballers' wives pushing designer buggies in six inch stilettoes ! Well, the Wagamama website actually explains the meaning of the name : "In Japanese, wagamama means a 'naughty child'. Wilful and determined, the child that is said to be 'wagamama' demands constant attention and is unable to comprehend why its desires cannot be instantly gratified. This is clearly where our brand gets some of its cheekier elements!" Love it ! And it's a word I may have to start using  here at The Madhouse when tempers inevitably start to fray over the long summer holiday !!

Wagamama have launched two new dressings this summer (their very first, in fact) :

The recipes have been created with the input of Wagamama's head chef, Ron Lento, and are in-keeping with the restaurant’s ethos of ‘positive eating, positive living’ so they are 100% natural and free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.

The Spicy Chilli, Coriander and Ginger dressing is gorgeous. It's light, not overly oily and is packed with flavour so a little goes a long way. It's delicious drizzled over salad but I also used it for perking up some leftover roast chicken. I think this would also be a great way of making cooked vegetables more interesting, especially in stir-fries or Asian-themed dishes.

My only very slight niggle is the bottle - it doesn't have a pouring spout so it's hard to control if you just want to add a slight drizzle to your salad.

How does your little one compare to an Olympian?

Today marks the beginning of the games and in celebration Growing Up Milk Info has done a little research into how your little one stacks up against the world's top athletes! Read on for more information :

TODDLERS CLIMB THEIR WAY TO THE TOP OF THE PODIUM


Research from Growingupmilkinfo.com reveals that it's not just the world's leading athletes that will be getting a workout over the next few weeks, with toddlers across the nation also conquering physical feats.

It comes as no surprise that toddlers are growing at an extraordinary pace, taking on major milestones, like crawling, climbing and walking. But what mums and dads may not realise is that, on a daily basis, the nutrition our little ones require to achieve these core activities is comparable to the power top sportspeople need to complete major feats like:

Running 30 miles at 10 minutes per mile – Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia, the current 5,000m world champion, holds the record of 12:37.35 – which sees him run just over 30 miles at 97 minutes per mile
Cycling 82 miles at 12-14 mph – that’s 524 times the laps of the Velodrome arena
More than 300 minutes of competitive football – that’s the quarter, semi and final games...plus extra time at every match
250 minutes boxing – that’s 83 rounds in the ring, which is over 27 individual fights
Nearly six hours hurdling – enough time for Dayron Robles, the world’s fastest 110m hurdler, to leap the course 1,678 times
Rowing for six hours – plenty of time for the British team to row over 16 laps of Eton Dorney lake 

The First Steps Research, commissioned by www.growingupmilkinfo.com, highlights how a toddler’s daily antics, which might include tottering from one end of the sofa to the other, playing in their sandpit and even their afternoon nap, uses the same energy, when compared ‘pound for pound’ to an adult running 30 miles.

Leading dietitian Dr Carrie Ruxton explains the science behind these findings: “If a little one saw their mum or dad run a marathon every day they would be pretty impressed! Of course, parents experience the same positive emotions when they witness the many milestones their toddler achieves each week…they are just unaware how much extra nutrition is needed to fuel this amazing development between the ages of one and three years.

“To illustrate the difference between a toddler’s and an adult’s diet, the First Steps Research worked out the average calories required to support a toddler on a daily basis. We took into consideration their weight, resting metabolic rate and energy necessary for growth, development and activity. Each of these factors, when compared with an average 70kg (154lb) adult, equated ‘pound for pound’ to a 3,600 calorie daily diet for an adult. Enough to run marathons, climb Ben Nevis twice and box more than seven fights consecutively.

“I hope the findings of the First Steps Research go some way to help parents understand why it is so important for our toddlers to get the ‘right’ healthy balanced diet designed to meet their special nutritional needs – including the right amount of vitamins – for this amazing period of growth and development.”
Getting the ‘right’ nutrition is the key point, as additional research by growingupmilkinfo.com reveals that more than three quarters (78%) of parents think their toddler’s dietary needs are met if they eat the same meals as the rest of their family. In fact, ‘pound for pound’ (per kg of body weight, per day) toddlers require:

• Nearly three times as much energy from food compared to adults
• More than four times the amount of iron and vitamin C
• Around three times the amount of calcium, zinc and vitamin A
• More fat than adults, particularly ‘good’ unsaturated fats
• Less salt in their food than adults

Hairbond Conditioner review


When the opportunity came up to review Hairbond hair products, I jumped at the chance - they're always my favourite beauty products to review because I have such thick, untamable hair ! - but I didn't know much about the company. My first port of call was therefore their Hairbond website to find out a little bit about the company. They explain : "Hairdressing expert Scott Michaels founded Hairbond United Kingdom in 2008. He has since designed and produced a range of first class British haircare products.  Scott comments “After nearly 15 years of retailing professional products I personally became dissatisfied with imported, boring and gimmicky brands with sub standard product range. Since Hairbond has launched, we are now exporting around the world. We are also continuing to generate a cult following, as well as a huge list of celebrity fans. Our brand is not about gimmicks but giving people a quality British made alternative to their hairstyling routine".” Oooh celeb fans - I like it already !

Well, I have to say, I wasn't immediately bowled over. I thought the packaging was a bit bland, to be honest, but I suppose it does have the advantage of being unisex. The impressive-looking crest on the label does look very posh but it's not very eye-catching.

But moving swiftly on, what matters most is what's on the inside. Well, again, I wasn't particularly impressed to begin with. There's nothing wrong with it, but the conditioner is plain white and quite runny, which I was surprised about, expecting something with a bit more wow-factor.

Nevertheless, I smeared it into my freshly-washed hair with an open mind and - wow ! - breathed in an unexpectedly intoxicating fragrance. I couldn't quite define it - it reminded me of coconut and raspberries or maybe raspberry-flavoured sherbert lemons - but whatever the ingredients, it's a real feel-good scent guaranteed to put a smile on your face. (I've just looked on the website and it's vanilla pineapple so I was miles off !)

Despite being less thick and creamy than my usual conditioners and hair masks, it left my hair feeling really sleek, soft and nourished. The advantage of the slightly runnier consistency is that it's much easier to wash out and doesn't weigh hair down afterwards.

The write-up on the website says : "The Hairbond Structure Professional Hair Conditioner builds body. This great Conditioner will leave your hair looking fuller and feeling revitalised. This product has a delicious vanilla pineapple fragrance and for best results shampoo hair with Hairbond Structure Shampoo." That actually would have put me off using it because if there is one thing I definitely DON'T need, it's more body and volume ! But it didn't make my hair look like a puffball, it looked really good actually.

Don't be put off by the deceptively bland exterior. The wow-factor comes from the fabulous fragrance and the results once you've used it.
