Kids app review : Home : Boov Pop

Today saw the release of a new kids' app, HOME: Boov Pop!, the official puzzle game based on DreamWorks Animation's 3D comedy adventure HOME, which is itself based on the best-selling book The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex. The app launch ties in with the film's release in cinemas next month (on March 27th). The film focuses on Oh, a loveable misfit from another planet, who lands on Earth and finds himself on the run from his own people. He forms an unlikely friendship with an adventurous girl named Tip who is on a quest of her own. Through a series of comic adventures with Tip, Oh comes to understand that being different and making mistakes is all part of being human, and together they discover the true meaning of the word HOME.

In the app, you can play as Oh, Tip and Captain Smek as they battle their intergalactic enemy across three stunning settings: Paris, Asia and Florida. I haven't seen the film but it looks like it should be good with very cute characters and beautifully illustrated backdrops.

The game reminds me very much of Bubble Shooter so the Madhouse kids knew exactly what to do and jumped straight in. You can connect power bubbles for epic chain reactions and use each character's special ability to maximise your score.

It's not hugely original but it's very addictive, even for the grown-ups !  The game is free to play (but does offer in-app purchases so check your settings).
