It seems longer than a week since we were on holiday ! There are a couple of busy weeks coming up as we have the conseils de classe (end-of-term after-school meetings for each class to discuss the marks and behaviour of each pupil) then the next week, the parent-teacher evenings. At least it gets dark later now - in the winter time, this means coming home in the pitch black. I've changed my shopping habits this week and put in an order with a home delivery supermarket company. We'll see how it works out but it could turn into a regular thing as it didn't work out any more expensive than usual. Have a great week. First off, I headed back to the orthodontist to get the prescription for an x-ray of his teeth. Then we headed to the medical centre, got an appointment and went back the next day for the x-rays. We now have an appointment at the orthodontist's in a couple of weeks (that I need to reschedule as I'll be at work) where we will discuss treatment options. After chasing up the roofers, they came back to measure the roof but still no idea when they will come and do the actual repairs. One step forward but we're still nowhere near the finishing line ! Next week, we're back to work/school which means setting the alarm for 6.15 again - boo ! In terms of food, I've been trying loads of new recipes throughout the holidays. Pierre loved the Philly-stuffed chicken and the General Tso's meatballs and has asked for them to be added to the regular run of recipes I make. A couple of meals didn't get made as Pierre was off watching football matches so I was eating alone and just used up stuff from the fridge.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div><b style="color: red;">Monday</b></div></div><div style="text-align: center;">

This idea of spring cleaning seems to have given the weather a much needed jolt, moving from frigid wintry weather to a couple of lovely warm, sunny and decidedly springlike days. Wandering about on my different errands today, I've been enjoying spotting the daffodils, crocuses and tulips that have been springing up (or probably being planted in full bloom by the council) everywhere. It's enough to put a spring in your step (no pun intended). The weather is still very changeable though, so when this month's Degustabox arrived, I was intrigued to see what would be hiding inside.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI-XBTqqXMRQ4NQlc4Vox5vVNvLzQgV_HNtJDSqqVl05f8PXGmcoz5dWrED1aNZ32vkqKgJLu7E1mMUA9UVr-HgHtlSElfmEm8a7uJHdOKGZYo4RCs8XPy5d5gyHKEn0WWp0BXg6Lr69nM56m8CTp56uRiRQ2b5RhO3JotUDYnu61LufHs-RYd6A7fxbj4/s2014/boundless%20snack.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2014" data-original-width="1486" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhI-XBTqqXMRQ4NQlc4Vox5vVNvLzQgV_HNtJDSqqVl05f8PXGmcoz5dWrED1aNZ32vkqKgJLu7E1mMUA9UVr-HgHtlSElfmEm8a7uJHdOKGZYo4RCs8XPy5d5gyHKEn0WWp0BXg6Lr69nM56m8CTp56uRiRQ2b5RhO3JotUDYnu61LufHs-RYd6A7fxbj4/s320/boundless%20snack.JPG" width="236" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic6i7OWNDpOjAuU3fLMMwB4JSG8V1lmjpbD9PH1ioWMvSxx8gY096k5BOSqInR24FpqUj7z2nt5vAq2j9sCK_pZZniXGRLFqGcgOv2SfjSG4okPk29lf8rbLtaFmlLUUIeevC_MMIoQ_CowsAqoMvVGBX2PKgl544sefB17g2EbttH94aI9VYMS4DvN6qg/s2451/snatts%20bocaditos.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2451" data-original-width="1687" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic6i7OWNDpOjAuU3fLMMwB4JSG8V1lmjpbD9PH1ioWMvSxx8gY096k5BOSqInR24FpqUj7z2nt5vAq2j9sCK_pZZniXGRLFqGcgOv2SfjSG4okPk29lf8rbLtaFmlLUUIeevC_MMIoQ_CowsAqoMvVGBX2PKgl544sefB17g2EbttH94aI9VYMS4DvN6qg/s320/snatts%20bocaditos.JPG" width="220" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The first product that I picked out of the box has Sophie's name written all over it : <span style="color: #2b00fe;"><b>Boundless Gut Happy Snacking Sweet Chilli</b></span> (RRP £2.50). I managed to scratch two things off the to-do list - I went to the doctor's to renew my prescription and I also dejunked the big understairs cupboard which was overflowing and is now much tidier. I also managed to fit in a day trip to Lille to visit Sophie which was fun and dejunked the kitchen which wasn't even on the list ! Another quiet week planned before we go back to school. I have some marking to do (teachers are never really on holiday sadly !) and I need to take Pierre clothes shopping, plus the patio and Pierre's bedroom are still on the to-do list. Next week we have the end of term meetings for each class (4.45 - 7.45pm as all the parents come in one at a time with the pupils) so it'll be a long week with two late nights, but at least it's the holidays afterwards. Well, we did but when she tried to book it, it turned out that there was no room left on the boat. She therefore came up with another similar cruise, leaving from Hamburg, stopping off for a day in Scotland (where we can squeeze in a day trip which includes Loch Ness, which sounds cool), then moving up to and around Iceland, before heading back for another day in Scotland, in the Orkneys, then back to Hamburg. The only problem is, the Icelandic volcano has been erupting ever since we booked and one of the excursions on offer from the cruise company is to the mud baths that have been evacuated and cut off by the lava flow. Hopefully it will all have calmed down by the time we leave ! It's all worked out randomly whenever we get to the end of the chapter we're studying but all of my classes ended up with an exam within a few days. Total nightmare but at least that's out of the way for a while now. This week should be a fairly quiet week, although I need to dash to the travel agent's to book our summer holiday. I think we're all set on a Northern Europe cruise this year, which will be something completely different. We get to see lots of different countries in a week - Denmark, Germany, Sweden, Lithuania, Latvia, then back to Copenhagen, where we can probably fit in another day. Sounds busy but at least we'll get to scratch off lots of countries on our map of places we've visited ! It is 100% plant-based, prebiotic and contains no added sugar. The taste comes from a bend of up to thirteen different plant foods, including nuts, seeds, fruit and veg (chicory root fibre and dried carrot, in case you were wondering). The flavour is rich and better than I expected, but I still think I'd prefer the Spiced Apple variety that other subscribers got in the box. Just fill the pot with boiling water up to the line, leave for three minutes and it's ready to eat. Bonus points for the recyclable pot. I didn't mention to the Madhouse kids that this was a vegan product and not one of them noticed until they'd cleared their plates and I told them ! On Wednesday and Thursday, it was announced that we had snow arriving and the education department said that teachers and kids who had problems getting to school because of the snow could stay at home and list work online for the kids to do. Loads of kids (and a few teachers) stayed off but there wasn't a single snowflake until Thursday night. There's still a small sprinkling of snow outside now but not much. It's been pretty cold but I think it's warming up slightly, though the pavements are still quite skiddy. Back into a normal week this week, with the school open day on Friday and some oral exams to hold on Wednesday on top of normal work. Last week, Pierre had his girlfriend over for the afternoon on Wednesday, then his mate over for a kebab for lunch on Thursday while I was at work, plus the girls went to Amsterdam for the day yesterday, so it's all happening. Busy busy ! The girls have been doing their exams at uni and things are ticking along nicely for me and Pierre. I still haven't found time to put the Christmas tree away yet but hopefully I'll find half an hour before the end of the weekend. We have our "galette des rois" after school on Monday when we all eat flaky pastry tarts and wish each other happy new year so I don't feel too late just yet ! Pierre is having a big tidy-up around the house because he wants to invite his girlfriend over - wonders will never cease and there are certainly no complaints from me ! This coming week should be fairly cool as I have a couple of hours invigilating exams for the oldest kids instead of doing lessons, the youngest ones have an intervention about bullying from the police so nothing to do there and I've been asked to go along on a trip to the cinema which gets me off a couple more hours too. So far so good in 2024 ... long may it last ! That means sorting out the washing, putting away all the presents and clothes and new buys (mainly books but luckily I am going to see a friend on Saturday and will be able to donate a big bag of books to her to make some extra space). I also need to clear out Pierre's room (not being used now), put some pressure on the insurance expert so I can finally get the roof fixed then sort out the water damage on Sophie's ceilings in the loft. Plenty to keep me busy for a while but I also want to have a good sort out in the kitchen and find ways to use up all the random things (often but not always from Degustaboxes) taking up space in the kitchen cupboards. I've also got to get my work-head back on and do some marking before I head back to work on Monday. May 2024 be the year that all your dreams come true. On that note, have you made any new year's resolutions this year? Maybe you want to shift a few pounds? Improve your diet? Start doing more sport?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">One of the simplest ways to give your diet an overhaul is by changing what you drink. Whether just for the month of January or maybe even permanently, how about giving up alcohol, fizzy drinks and caffeine-laden hot drinks and switching to water? Water is the most natural drink that you can give to your body but let's face it, bottled water is just too expensive and tap water often doesn't taste great. You never really know what is coming out of the tap either and it sometimes tastes of chlorine or other impurities, so you feel like your healthy new year's resolution may not actually be as good for your health as you hoped.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj0swd-Z0C_G2Mo3wv61vlOgaAp31pZEbMb97Zrw-7nmVgZdQodARUBavBeGrWf690kHb-P6W_iDUJXLgAtU28aK7Tk8Dm2XF7qTEJBkoY7ID1LEZZt237Fj_55YbQ6bbxy9lYxWWYnpB8fab8DG6Mb2r0Iuh_2KrKJLJ8WFskO6NGteGowoMRS4xjKFYn/s400/zerowater%207%20cup%20jug.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="400" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj0swd-Z0C_G2Mo3wv61vlOgaAp31pZEbMb97Zrw-7nmVgZdQodARUBavBeGrWf690kHb-P6W_iDUJXLgAtU28aK7Tk8Dm2XF7qTEJBkoY7ID1LEZZt237Fj_55YbQ6bbxy9lYxWWYnpB8fab8DG6Mb2r0Iuh_2KrKJLJ8WFskO6NGteGowoMRS4xjKFYn/s320/zerowater%207%20cup%20jug.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Zerowater to the rescue ! The 7 Cup jug that we have been trying out has a simple, sleek design that fits in with any kitchen colour scheme. The white and transparent colours suggest cleanliness and transparency, which is what most people are looking for in their water. The slim, space-saving shape is designed to fit in standard UK fridge doors so you can instantly have fresh, chilled water to drink as desired. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">My favourite thing about the jug is that it has a perfectly sealed lid and reservoir<span style="text-align: left;">, making it possible to pour water that has already been filtered without spilling water that's still filtering. As well as </span><span style="text-align: left;">adding a one cup capacity to the existing 6-cup design, this also means that you don't have to wait around for the water to filter before you can use the jug - always a pain when you're desperate for a drink but the jug is empty.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">In terms of filtration, five sophisticated technologies work together to remove virtually all dissolved solids from your water. What would be hiding inside? Winter warmers, festive nibbles or maybe some completely new and unexpected things to finish the year in style? Well, this year's box didn't have a specified theme so it offered a little bit of everything.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5E_ngRH89NpWuPQC413Ds_-1ACdHUNqlzWjsaWEqCNNxQXGjiLyccandxdiux9Fte8lQQOPQ7e7na33tU-Cj_XHu702C36PzonsL32egXpAc3sc05sYWMI5WV9PRp2qhq8xXicgQwebOwtPaviLpExyDS3T8zTbBpn0fIQA8k4ECD9x0yP9pJ51dz-gXA/s2714/heinz%20soups%20together.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2377" data-original-width="2714" height="350" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5E_ngRH89NpWuPQC413Ds_-1ACdHUNqlzWjsaWEqCNNxQXGjiLyccandxdiux9Fte8lQQOPQ7e7na33tU-Cj_XHu702C36PzonsL32egXpAc3sc05sYWMI5WV9PRp2qhq8xXicgQwebOwtPaviLpExyDS3T8zTbBpn0fIQA8k4ECD9x0yP9pJ51dz-gXA/w400-h350/heinz%20soups%20together.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Starting off with the Product of the Month, we discovered two tins of <span style="color: #2b00fe;"><b>Heinz soup</b></span> (RRP 2 x £1.70), which are always perfect as a quick warming lunch or evening meal in autumn and winter. The<span style="color: #2b00fe;"><b> French Onion Soup</b></span> is a variety I have never tried, despite really enjoying the flavour of homemade French Onion Soup, and this tin didn't disappoint, offering the rich flavour of onions, perked up with a hint of red wine. This is delicious topped with a slice or two of grilled bread topped with cheese. The <span style="color: #2b00fe;"><b>Spicy Parsnip Soup</b></span> was another new variety to me and I really enjoyed it. The sweetness of the parsnip flavour is given a little boost with the addition of a warming spice combination of red pepper and chilli. The soups are quick and simple to warm up, on the stove or in the microwave, and contain no artificial colours or preservatives. They are also low in fat, low in sugar and vegetarian, so they are ideal for tying in with meat-free or healthy meal plans in the New Year. Available in Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, ASDA and Ocado.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrC_BEwjWUmZmkcFjBHSuugVH-BuXMU2-YpWqtYPtZ15qLblT9gWs7ASkbhhew-ygJHYqi1_ybo6ohKpsoeRb-tz8VNpAubeuX2V7m4kYJpjDfJcUNOh-aWkpLmEMJ2Ks3tn4ovTHvFGP-YQZ0JKCKaG8nVTfqpg8P_IUBmHC6d9MvsyrbJSZUtSgLABhC/s1904/alpen%20delight.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1126" data-original-width="1904" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrC_BEwjWUmZmkcFjBHSuugVH-BuXMU2-YpWqtYPtZ15qLblT9gWs7ASkbhhew-ygJHYqi1_ybo6ohKpsoeRb-tz8VNpAubeuX2V7m4kYJpjDfJcUNOh-aWkpLmEMJ2Ks3tn4ovTHvFGP-YQZ0JKCKaG8nVTfqpg8P_IUBmHC6d9MvsyrbJSZUtSgLABhC/w400-h236/alpen%20delight.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #2b00fe;"><b>Alpen Delight</b></span> (RRP 2 x 59p) is a new brand of snack bars that offer the perfect balance of healthy and tasty. We got the Raspberry Rocky Road and Chocolate Caramel & Shortbread varieties which were both a big hit here at The Madhouse. It's a classic French dish and was appreciated by everyone. We also bought some steaks from the reduced section which weren't on the plan either. We're into our final menu plan of the week now as we'll be visiting family over Christmas and New Year. Christmas still seems miles away but it'll be here very soon. I found a new roofer who actually showed up as arranged on Friday morning. He explained that the metal strip across the top of the roof which should be totally flat is all buckled up and lifts up like waves which explains the leaks. I'm just awaiting his quote now then he can come back and do the work. He needs to replace the whole metal strip again apparently. One of the meals from last week is being reposted this week as I forgot when I was writing up the menu plan that we'd be going to visit Sophie in Lille for a Christmas dinner and a trip to the Christmas market.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b style="color: red;">Monday</b></div><div style="text-align: center;">

He's been featured on my blog many times for his numerous works of fiction in the <a href="https://madhousefamilyreviews.blogspot.com/search?q=windflower" target="_blank">Sgt Windflower series</a>, as well as many tasty Canadian-style recipes in my #readcookeat posts inspired by the foodie mentions in his novels. If that's got you interested, I highly recommend going to check out the recipe for <a href="http://madhousefamilyreviews.blogspot.com/2014/06/readcookeat-recipe-newfoundland-raisin-molasses-bread.html" target="_blank">Newfoundland Molasses Raisin Bread</a>. Winston Windflower loves it and so do I !</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This time though, I'm here to tell you about another of Mike Martin's new releases. In the run up to the festive season, he has turned to a younger audience, releasing two children's books with a Christmassy theme, The Christmas Beaver and, the one that we reviewed, A Friend For Christmas.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The story introduces us to a big bunny family living in a warren under a big city, made up of Robbie Rabbit, his wife Rowena and their nine offspring whose names all start with R, making it great fun to read out loud at bedtime. (Can I just point out that, as an adult, I learned something in this book. Baby rabbits are called kits or kittens. How did I get to age 50 without ever even realising that I didn't know that !)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The rabbits are getting ready for winter when they receive a surprise visit from an unexpected animal - Whisperer, a big grey cat. Robbie is initially scared of the cat, a natural enemy to the rabbit family, but the cat seems to want to be friends. Should Robbie trust him? As it is Christmas, a time for peace on earth and good will to all men (and animals), Robbie sets his doubts aside and everyone has a lovely time, enjoying the spirit of trust, acceptance and friendship.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">It's a lovely tale, putting the focus on important human values, that I could imagine Sgt Windflower telling his daughters Amelia Louise and Stella at bedtime. A special mention goes out to the illustrator, Sri Lankan Shey Kolee, whose beautiful artwork really brings the story to life. Definitely one to share with the kids or the grandkids in the run up to Christmas.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; While some people are pretty easy to buy for - kids always love toys, teenagers love techie stuff, women love perfume and beauty products, ... - some people are trickier. Trying to find gift ideas for male relatives, whether that be husbands, fathers or fathers-in-law, always seems more complicated to me. Aftershave, DVDs and T-shirts are some popular gift ideas, but if you're looking for something completely different and more original, how about one of these alcohol-themed puzzles from Puzzle Cru?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiHF6uCItsNwZXrNKb-hX8M0Z8WueFHuUB-jEA13f_aSbNX7uqDI0_wN5em9I5PjQ4IvVaFy_kmdxQOetLvgQKn8xHHES1Ym7hR74vOp5_L13VF2xkMLbwtVsmSInVT0Lzi5s3K02aYlpogzm51D3__h1O0CxTmJtHeyjvIS6IGKNo6dPHJUs-XxiELNNS/s1301/finished%20puzzle.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="920" data-original-width="1301" height="283" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiHF6uCItsNwZXrNKb-hX8M0Z8WueFHuUB-jEA13f_aSbNX7uqDI0_wN5em9I5PjQ4IvVaFy_kmdxQOetLvgQKn8xHHES1Ym7hR74vOp5_L13VF2xkMLbwtVsmSInVT0Lzi5s3K02aYlpogzm51D3__h1O0CxTmJtHeyjvIS6IGKNo6dPHJUs-XxiELNNS/w400-h283/finished%20puzzle.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The puzzles are designed to represent the various regions around the world that are renowned for wine or whisky. We received the Wines of Spain & Portugal puzzle which gives a great deal of insight into the Iberian Peninsular. Showing everything from Portugal's windswept west coast to the sun-drenched shores of the Spanish Costas, the puzzle highlights towns, popular tourist sites and food and drink options. From crisp Cava to regal Rioja and powerful Port, the Iberian peninsula has it all !</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjcV0FoYvjmiGbAoaJ71KwwunMl3JXjhR1WelXjLg4PanCjGYgwqi2h8OXvHtDaPf9fLB4XQiz195ES8MgNxg7Aio2KhL0oA-rBny4BpmRXT4cu_rGeEGq2IDjszSiayp9v_V0szfixND8ScHhD0l1EPVCCPasqyqwgi77WtWh7ZsCODu6BpIGxxqCA7uj/s981/puzzle%20close%20up.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="717" data-original-width="981" height="293" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjcV0FoYvjmiGbAoaJ71KwwunMl3JXjhR1WelXjLg4PanCjGYgwqi2h8OXvHtDaPf9fLB4XQiz195ES8MgNxg7Aio2KhL0oA-rBny4BpmRXT4cu_rGeEGq2IDjszSiayp9v_V0szfixND8ScHhD0l1EPVCCPasqyqwgi77WtWh7ZsCODu6BpIGxxqCA7uj/w400-h293/puzzle%20close%20up.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The puzzles also reveal a selection of fish and marine mammals that live in the sea around Spain and Portugal, including sharks and rays. It's an interesting puzzle, offering lots of information about Spain and Portugal that wine-lovers would be interested in, but I can also see this appealing to teenagers learning Spanish at school.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The puzzle pieces are precisely cut and fit together firmly. You could display the finished puzzle in a frame on the wall but if not, there is also a poster in the box. We decided to keep this in the box though, as a helpful guide to fitting the pieces together. The puzzle contains 1000 pieces, making it the perfect size for the whole family to fit together as a team. To make this into an extra special and unique Christmas gift, you could pair it with a bottle of one of the wines featured on the map.<span style="text-align: left;"> </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">Other puzzles in the set include Wines of Italy, Wines of France and Whiskies of Scotland.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">RRP : £16.19 (currently £15.29)</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">for more information : </span><a href="https://www.gingerfox.co.uk/collections/puzzles/products/wines-of-spain-portugal-puzzle" style="text-align: left;">Wines Of Spain & Portugal Puzzle | 1000 Piece | Puzzle Cru – Ginger Fox</a></div><p></p>

In those two decades, they have become one of the leaders in Fairtrade spices and also blend spices and herbs to their own recipes, creating a range of organic seasonings. Two thirds of the people who work at Steenbergs (including the management team) are women, but that's not the only thing that makes them special. They are completely focused on organic and ethical trading, knowing down to the region and often the exact one-hectare farm who grew the spices or herbs that they sell. Since 2020,they have also been carbon neutral.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">However, being a fabulous ethical and ecological company is no good if the products that they deal in are nothing special. This new launch ties in with </span><span style="text-align: left;">the publication of Sabrina’s seventh cookbook, Flavour, published by Aster, which is </span><span style="text-align: left;">a brand-new collection of simple, delicious, crowd-pleasing recipes which can be tailored to all tastes and budgets.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"> E</span><span style="text-align: left;">ncapsulating Sabrina’s passion for flavour, the new spice blends </span><span style="text-align: left;">have been hand blended to Sabrina’s own recipes.</span><span style="text-align: left;"> As soon as I flipped off the lids of the jars, the scent tantalised my nostrils and had me mentally wandering through the busy, hectic souks that we visited on our holidays to Tunisia and Turkey. They really reminded me of the spices we brought back from those trips, in plain plastic bags and often tossed together seemingly randomly by the enthusiastic stallholders. They would happily tell us that the spices would be perfect for couscous or tagines, rubbed onto meat and poultry or just tossed into soups and stews. Basically, they would be good for everything and we were never disappointed.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUujzsQBPV4ZNhZWlMP7_E43hoSn7T9FxxQLQVOcvF14UgJLiehPGGuVUhD92QrgjQJ8ryzI8bhofA-OoHj203zb7Y3I24Dkc7SF8uV3I5nFDslk83jBo0Uh8RHhvtriOyLFzgPX1RRX7HygibZirIgou6Ln5bB69oDno4FJbwZRXq_-BmbbpmoUkhb3ul/s1288/steenbergs%20Flavour%20blend%20final.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="624" data-original-width="1288" height="194" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUujzsQBPV4ZNhZWlMP7_E43hoSn7T9FxxQLQVOcvF14UgJLiehPGGuVUhD92QrgjQJ8ryzI8bhofA-OoHj203zb7Y3I24Dkc7SF8uV3I5nFDslk83jBo0Uh8RHhvtriOyLFzgPX1RRX7HygibZirIgou6Ln5bB69oDno4FJbwZRXq_-BmbbpmoUkhb3ul/w400-h194/steenbergs%20Flavour%20blend%20final.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;">The first spice blend is called Flavour Blend and it</span><span style="text-align: left;"> is a mix of cumin, coriander, cinnamon, turmeric, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne, lime powder and cracked black pepper. It was love at first fragrant sniff as far as I was concerned and instantly brought back memories of lamb tagines enjoyed in exotic lands. Sabrina explains, </span><span style="text-align: left;">“This earthy blend of spices is simply perfect for roasted meats, root vegetables and squashes and not forgetting, the perfect combination for kebabs such as shawarmas, koftas and red meat kebabs.” I think this would be a great spice blend for dishes such as <a href="http://madhousefamilyreviews.blogspot.com/2015/10/globecooking-recipe-bastilla-morocco.html" target="_blank">Bastilla</a>, <a href="http://madhousefamilyreviews.blogspot.com/2013/08/moroccan-recipe-kefta-meatball-tagine.html" target="_blank">Kefta Meatball Tagine</a> and <a href="https://madhousefamilyreviews.blogspot.com/2018/04/readcookeat-recipe-lamb-tagine.html" target="_blank">Lamb Tagine</a>.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLXeasyDYysQNdtHjaK4a2Ik81Zi3BfcnKRr02vItrTIpWIQrYxx7mCRZyRInrQfnaWqU852-DkPvQljBP08PFz3Lasuv4axhBS4nNNAV9equdyz9cvCtFb9nYwDR5uFg_8l6bIEFDcbS-16pqTnEmeStULuBFLBlEclpbqyejh-bjOqnr9934D9Zn4Fik/s1187/steenberge%20persiana%20blend%20final.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="564" data-original-width="1187" height="190" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLXeasyDYysQNdtHjaK4a2Ik81Zi3BfcnKRr02vItrTIpWIQrYxx7mCRZyRInrQfnaWqU852-DkPvQljBP08PFz3Lasuv4axhBS4nNNAV9equdyz9cvCtFb9nYwDR5uFg_8l6bIEFDcbS-16pqTnEmeStULuBFLBlEclpbqyejh-bjOqnr9934D9Zn4Fik/w400-h190/steenberge%20persiana%20blend%20final.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"> Persiana Blend appears on the cover of Sabrina’s now iconic debut cookbook Persiana, released in 2014, and was originally created for one of Sabrina’s signature dishes from the book, the slow-roasted spice-perfumed lamb. It contains rose petals, sumac, lime powder, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, garlic powder and cayenne. It is perfect for roasted meats, grills, root vegetables and squashes but also great with game, poultry and oily fish and seafood too. You can see tiny specks of rose petals in the blend which I was slightly unsure of to begin with, but this actually gives a really fragrant and authentic hit to Middle Eastern dishes. This can be used to give a flavour hit to a variety of dishes including <a href="http://madhousefamilyreviews.blogspot.com/2015/06/globecooking-recipe-jewelled-persian-rice.html" target="_blank">Jewelled Persian Rice with Pomegranates, Walnuts and Parsley</a>, <a href="http://madhousefamilyreviews.blogspot.com/2015/11/globecooking-recipe-chermoula-spiced-carrots.html" target="_blank">Chermoula Spiced Carrots</a> or <a href="http://madhousefamilyreviews.blogspot.com/2017/11/globecooking-recipe-bulgur-pilavi-turkey.html" target="_blank">Bulgur Pilavi</a>. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWIFcCVGBTclyRKYjdkYYS6MuuY19RM5w63IsA8nynRlD_eR4K7M6MHtXvdbyzKvVeSpKu5EsUWxdvLu2f5XyGP16dhe9fnA-1AFGvnqkO-QoMWHiHUevj-bQ1Cn-IutZSpdgiRw-xlkKIP7e0XJ8Kk6ly7qCAwr-P_sxTFiYxL3CY71Mkvhm_FqzuZbNy/s1231/steenbergs%20bazaar%20mix%20final.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="572" data-original-width="1231" height="186" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWIFcCVGBTclyRKYjdkYYS6MuuY19RM5w63IsA8nynRlD_eR4K7M6MHtXvdbyzKvVeSpKu5EsUWxdvLu2f5XyGP16dhe9fnA-1AFGvnqkO-QoMWHiHUevj-bQ1Cn-IutZSpdgiRw-xlkKIP7e0XJ8Kk6ly7qCAwr-P_sxTFiYxL3CY71Mkvhm_FqzuZbNy/w400-h186/steenbergs%20bazaar%20mix%20final.png" width="400" /></a></div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"> Bazaar blend is a fabulously versatile blend of oregano, paprika, Spanish citrus pepper, ginger and garlic powder. It's available at Tesco and Co-op.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2knIeO_fYiDWbY9wivTC8wkYtk1r5otnr4BEBo2LtalI2QC65JFkypsWcBito2exL2MC3F4F_E5V7VCr6RWwhFPc1rptcNMt969nch6wjLr5yKsiD8vx4rz8psIlEHyG13ndNGZQxQmCKaUqc4H3vAgUEsgWgw80qjrOKuqM6Re4IkNzCAlh3P8HZQLPV/s2315/smarts.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="942" data-original-width="2315" height="130" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2knIeO_fYiDWbY9wivTC8wkYtk1r5otnr4BEBo2LtalI2QC65JFkypsWcBito2exL2MC3F4F_E5V7VCr6RWwhFPc1rptcNMt969nch6wjLr5yKsiD8vx4rz8psIlEHyG13ndNGZQxQmCKaUqc4H3vAgUEsgWgw80qjrOKuqM6Re4IkNzCAlh3P8HZQLPV/s320/smarts.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><b><span style="color: #2b00fe;">PhD Smart Bar Cookies & Cream</span></b> (RRP £1.50) is a half-sized bar but it's the perfect size for on-the-go snacking. Hopefully everything will start to dry out then as we have a small amount of mould appearing in Juliette's room. After sorting out Pierre's room and the passage, it seems to be going round and round the house without ever getting fixed. Hopefully this will be the end of it. *Fingers crossed* Apart from that, I'm still in the midst of filling in school reports and going to class meetings. Once that's all done in a couple of weeks, I can't start looking forward to Christmas. We might be putting up our Christmas tree this afternoon actually. It's a week earlier than normal by why not ?! I think (fingers crossed) I've managed to find someone to do it today, but the only bad news is, we have to wait a week for them to come out. Unfortunately it's still pouring hard at the moment 90% of the time. Typical ! I'm just heading into the busy end-of-term time at school too. We got the parent-teacher evenings out of the way last week. Next week is the first of the class meetings looking at exam results, prospects and advice for pupils and parents. Before then, I have to do my last exams and fill in the school reports. Always a busy time. All of that explains why I'm so late getting this week's menu plan out ! Just as I was coming out of work on Friday afternoon, the kids sent me a message to say that there was water coming in through the roof in Sophie's loft conversion in several places, then going through her floor and coming out through the light in Pierre's room below. They set up a load of buckets to catch the water but the floor was soaked. The insurance office is shut until Tuesday as it's a bank holiday weekend (which I forgot about until I went there on Saturday morning !) so I'll have to wait a while. I'm not sure if this is an add-on to the insurance claim for the roof from the past storm (still waiting for the reply from the expert to allow the claim/work to go through to replace some missing tiles since March !) or if it's a new one from this latest storm. On top of all that, Sophie has just had a blood test and discovered she has diabetes so she's in hospital for a few days while they get her insulin levels sorted out. Talk about a nightmare weekend ! Next week is a busy one with two parent-teacher evenings, which I could do without, but I'm sure we'll make it through somehow !
