When we were asked if we'd like to review some tortilla chips from Mexican Dave's, I couldn't suppress a smile. Dave isn't exactly the first name that springs to mind when thinking of Mexico. It's a bit like Indian Bob's or Portuguese Kevin's ! I couldn't help but wonder who was behind the name Mexican Dave. Or was it a typo and it was supposed to be Mexican Wave?!
Well, luckily, the mystery is explained on the website (kind of!). We learn that (and I quote, obviously !) : "The local youngsters of Temapache often teased Mexican Dave for the handlebar moustache he grew shortly before his ninth birthday. They called him ‘el niño poco con el bigote’ (the little kid with the hairy lip) - you don’t have to be witty to be cruel" and that with the help of Abuela Patrícia Del Marcos Hernández (Nana Pat), not to mention accompanied by his trusty sidekick Diablo the donkey, he created the finest tortillas in all of Mexico ! There's even a fact box where you learn litle nuggets of Mexican Dave trivia, such as he's learning English by watching old episodes of Byker Grove and Nana Pat is not allowed within 300 feet of Henry Winkler (The Fonz) ! I bet there were large amounts of tequila accompanying the tortilla chips on the day they put together the website !!
But enough about the funny website and the enigmatic Mexican Dave, and on to the serious business of reviewing the tortilla chips themselves !
They come in three flavours - Lightly Salted, Nacho Cheese and Hot-Hot Chilli - and adopt the traditional big 225g share-bag format of most other tortilla chip brands, making them ideal for pouring into a big bowl with some dips (or just for grazing in front of the telly with your other half, once the kids are in bed !).
Taste-wise, they have a wheaty, natural flavour and I love the fact that they're not at all greasy. The Lightly Salted ones are slightly bland so they're ideal with spicy dips and the Hot-Hot Chilli ones have a distinct kick so some cooling salsa, sour cream or guacamole on the side could be a good idea for those. Our favourites were the Nacho Cheese ones which are delicately flavoured so you can still savour the wheaty taste of the chips, rather than just the bucketloads of seasoning dumped on similar brands, but with a definite tangy cheese flavour coming through. They're lovely and crunchy and decidedly moreish.
100g contains 482 calories, 24.6g of fat (of which 2.3g saturates) and 6.5g of fibre - that's almost half a big bagful though so you probably wouldn't eat that many in one sitting.
If you'd like to give them a try, there's currently a giveaway on the website where you can win some. In Mexican Dave's inimitable style, they say : "Whether you are moustacheless or moustacheful, Diablo the Donkey has a saddlebag full of goodies to cheer your soul. Want us to send you 10 magnificent moustaches and a crate of Mexican Dave’s Legendary Tortilla Chips so you can have your very own Mexican party? Of course you do!" Totally nutty, but they do make rather nice tortilla chips !
