B.sensible waterproof fitted sheets
Waterproof sheets are a necessary evil. The bane of many parents' life (well, mine anyway ! ) and definitely a case of can't live with them, can't live without them. If you have a potty-training toddler or an older child who still wets the bed every now and then, you'll know how absolutely catastrophic it can be if you forget to put a waterproof mattress protector on. In fact, in an effort to save time (because it's always around 3am that you get a sleepy little face looming in front of you saying "Mummy, I've done a wee-wee in my bed" ! ), I always put a waterproof mattress protector and fitted top sheet on both sides of the mattress. That way, if you're dragged out of your slumber, you don't need to change the whole bed - you just rip off the soiled sheet and mattress protector, flip the mattress over and it's instantly ready for your little one to climb back into bed with a quilt hastily thrown over them. Tada ! No more rummaging around in the middle of the night, trying not to wake everybody else up as you desperately try to locate some fresh bedding (which is invariably in the top cupboard you can't reach) !
Well, I was intrigued about B. sensible's range of waterproof sheets being dubbed "a new dawn in bedding for babies, toddlers & grownups" so I was really pleased when I was given the chance to test one out. The first thing that leapt out at me is that they are not only machine-washable but CAN ALSO BE TUMBLE DRIED ! Excuse the capitals but when I said they were the bane of my life, I really really hate having damp mattress protectors hanging around in the bathroom because firstly, they take up so much space that the kids' bath-time becomes more complicated ; secondly they take so long to dry that they invariably smell all damp and mouldy before they're ready to go back in the linen cupboard ; and thirdly, as they dry, they are out on show to everyone who goes in the bathroom and a constant reminder to the poor child who has wet the bed and would probably rather keep the whole thing quiet. To be honest, the fact that they can be tumble-dried is enough to sell them to me already but I was still keen to see what they were like.
Well, as I unwrapped the sheet, I was amazed at how soft and silky it was. The underside feels rubbery like normal waterproof sheets (although it didn't have the nasty rubbery smell or the horrible crackly noise you get with some of them) but the topside that you'll be sleeping on is really lovely and soft. It feels almost cool like silk and, whereas I'd usually put a sheet over the top of the mattress protector because they feel quite rough, this b.sensible sheet actually feels soft enough to sleep directly on.
Further research on the website explains that "B.sensible is an innovative range of beautifully soft, breathable, waterproof bedding for babies and children. It’s the first 2 in 1 fitted sheet and protector that acts like a second skin and is as soft as silk and as cool as linen." Strangely enough, that's exactly what I just said ! It actually is designed as both a fitted sheet and protector so you won’t need to use another mattress protector alongside it. And that means less wee-soaked washing to deal with - yippee ! It also means that older kids who feel self-conscious about having a mattress protector on their beds can just put one of these silky sheets on and no one (in particular their friends) will ever know.
But it just keeps getting better and better. They continue, "B.sensible’s bedding is made from Tencel, a 100% natural fibre that comes from eucalyptus trees. Combined with a smart stretchable membrane that is virtually undetectable, it acts as a hypo-allergenic barrier against moisture, bacteria and dust mites. The smooth surface of the fibre and its extraordinary moisture absorption provides a really healthy environment for babies and young children. Another amazing feature of this new-age fibre is its ability to regulate body temperature, acting like a second skin. It also absorbs significantly more moisture than cotton and dries much more quickly." Great news if you have particularly sweaty kids (or husbands !).
Yes, I did just say husbands because another thing that impressed me is that B.sensible bedding comes in a selection of sizes from Moses Baskets right upwards to king-sized bed, as well as a range of colours. It is clinically proven to be suitable for babies and children with sensitive skin, eczema, asthma and rhinitis. There you go - it might even stop your husband from snoring too ! I think I definitely need to fit our bed with one too !
RRP : from £15.50 for a Moses Basket, Cot £19.35 upwards
