Born Free Twist 'n' Pop Easy Drink Straw Cup

Awww I just had a little trip down memory lane reading a review I wrote about Born Free baby bottles and training cups when Pierre was barely six months old. He's changed so much ! Now aged 15 and a half months, he's learning to drink out of sippy cups so Born Free kindly sent us one of their Twist 'n' Pop Easy Drink Straw Cups to try out.

I have to say, it reminds me very much of the Nuby No Spill Flip It Flexi-Straw trainer cup that I recently reviewed here. It features the same large size (140z/400ml), the same "narrow-waisted" form that makes it easier for little hands to grip, the same sliding panel to tuck away the straw when not in use and even the same green colour (although other colours are available). It also offers the same benefits as the other Born Free products that I reviewed - the total lack of Bisphenol-A, Phthalates and PVC and the BornFree Venting System, allowing for a free flow of liquid and reducing the hard sucking that often leads to middle-ear infections in small children.

The Twist 'n' Pop is designed for children aged 2+ so I let Pierre have a little try but the main tester was 5-year-old Juliette who is totally capable of drinking out of a normal glass, with or without a straw, but loves drinking out of a special straw sippy cup just for the fun of it !

Compared to the Nuby cup, I found that the little sliding panel was easier to operate for little fingers but Juliette did keep trying to push it right round anti-clockwise instead of reversing the action to seal it, with the catastrophic result that if she pushed too hard, she screwed the whole lid of the cup off. It's not a leak-proof cup (and doesn't claim to be) but if you turn it upside down, it only drips slowly so the spillage is quick to clean up. Pierre did knock the cup over and nothing spilt out so you really have to try hard to get it to leak !

The straw is very easy to drink out of, because there is no valve in it that you need to squeeze (with your lips or teeth) to open the tube and let the liquid through. This makes it much easier to suck the drink through but does mean that it's slightly more messy because there is a small amount of spillage when Pierre pulls the straw out of his mouth and the straw doesn't automatically seal itself off. (As a point of comparison, the Nuby straw does seal itself automatically but it is harder to suck through so you have to choose what suits you best !)
