The Way Home (DVD)

It's every parent's worst nightmare. You take your eyes off your young son or daughter for literally a couple of minutes and they totally disappear. Just reading about it taps into a deep vein of dread, horror and sheer panic in every parent in the world. That is the basic storyline of The Way Home.

The hard-working and not overly-available dad, called Randy Simpkins, is played by Dean Cain, who you will probably know from Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. He pops off to check his work emails when he's supposed to be looking after his two-year-old son, Joe, and when he comes back, Joe is nowhere to be found. He and his wife pull together and do everything they can to find him.

This film targets a Christian audience and focuses on the community and the local congregation coming together to help and support the Simpkins in their hour of need. It is a real tear-jerker but ultimately feel-good movie that the whole family can enjoy. It deals with a deeply emotional topic, especially as it is based on a true story. It's one of those films that makes you want to get your priorities straight and reassess your work-family life balance so be prepared to schedule in lots of quality family time and extra cuddles afterwards !

It's a bit cheesy, the camerawork is sometimes a bit wobbly and some of the acting isn't Oscar-worthy but it's a nice inoffensive family film that will appeal to all parents but in particular those of Christian faith. It will make you think about what's important in life, which has to be a good thing.
