Haynes Healthy Eating Guide - Carina Norris

It's a New Year so thousands of people will be making resolutions to get fit, fight the flab or eat more healthily. With dozens of new fitness DVDs and diet books joining the ranks of those filling the already crowded shelves in the shops, it's hard to know where to start when looking for good advice. Well, Haynes' guide Healthy Eating : The Practical Guide to a Balanced Nutritional Diet by Carina Norris is a good way to revise your basics.

It won't give you the secret to losing shedloads of weight in a few weeks (and even advises you that these kinds of faddy diets are never a good idea or efficient in the long run) and it won't promise to give you the body of a top model - in fact, it won't promise you anything at all. But it will give you lots of sensible advice for a long-term approach to healthy eating and weight loss (or gain, depending on your situation).

A lot of the advice is common-sense and quite obvious, so it's a good basic guide for a teenager, someone moving out of home and needing to learn to think about a balanced diet for the first time or those who have got so used to eating convenience foods that they have forgotten, or never thought about, the abc of healthy eating. But even if you have quite a good knowledge of nutrition and what constitutes a healthy diet and body weight, you'll still find nuggets of interesting and useful information that can help you improve your diet and general health, often by substituting things you eat without thinking about for healthier but equally simple alternatives.

As Haynes explain : "Written by nutritionist Carina Norris of Channel 4’s Turn Back Your Body Clock, the guide explains the principles of good nutrition and how to achieve them in the 21st century – even when time and money are short. The book takes a positive approach to healthy eating, encouraging readers to look at the benefits of a balanced diet and offering simple, practical steps to improve nutrition for the whole family." Carina Norris is a registered nutritionist, author and journalist and is regularly called on for TV and radio interviews when nutrition is in the news. She is also involved in nutritional research and has just completed her PhD on children’s nutrition.

The Healthy Eating guide, now published in paperback, is split into short chapters that are easy to dip into, even if you're not an avid reader, and includes sections on :

· Body fuel – the nutrients we need and why
· The nuts and bolts of a healthy diet – the food we should eat
· Key nutritional ‘must haves’ for different life stages
· Food and health
· Practical ways to eat a healthy diet including meal ideas and healthy eating when you’re out and about

Carina also discloses why we put on weight and how to lose it, as well as explaining cravings and how to snack healthily. With information on all types of food intolerances, allergies, weight issues, age-related food consideration, the book provides an easy to follow guide for all ages, from children to the elderly.
