Last year, I reviewed (here) Sea-Bands acupressure wristbands, which can help in relieving many types of nausea, including morning sickness, travel-sickness chemotherapy induced nausea and post operative nausea. Well, now, new research shows that you can add migraine nausea to that list. I know a lot of people suffer horribly with migraines so that's got to be welcome news. More info below :

Putting pressure on migraine nausea : New study offers hope for UK’s migraine sufferers

Migraine affects 8 million people in the UK, with 190,000 migraine attacks occurring each day. The condition is listed by the World Health Organization as one of the top 20 causes of disability and accounts for an estimated 25 million days lost from school or work every year in the UK alone. However, a promising new study shows that Sea-Band® acupressure wristbands are an effective, drug-free solution to migraine-related nausea.

The study, carried out at a German clinic specialising in migraine and headache therapy, showed that Sea-Band® could significantly reduce nausea and the resultant vomiting in long suffering migraineurs. Participants estimated the severity of their nausea during migraine attacks before using Sea-Band® on a score from 0 (no nausea) to 10 (severe nausea), with an average nausea score of 6.2. After using Sea-Band®, the majority (83%) of participants reported a noticeable reduction in their nausea compared to former migraine attacks, with 44% saying it was significantly reduced. Relief was reported after an average of 28 minutes and nearly all participants (98%) said that they’d use Sea-Band® again.

Dr Zoltan Medgyessy, the senior doctor at the clinic’s headache department, supervised the study. He said: “Some sufferers find it difficult to time nausea medication effectively, but Sea-Band® can be used before or after the onset of nausea to bring relief. Many sufferers are reluctant to take nausea medication – particularly pregnant women and children – so would welcome a drug-free alternative.”

Dr Andy Dowson, Chairman of Migraine Action’s Medical Advisory Board, said: “Migraine is much more than just a headache and can be extremely debilitating. Nausea and vomiting can reduce the effectiveness of medication used to treat migraine by making it difficult to keep down long enough for it to be absorbed; gastric stasis can also delay the absorption of medication thus reducing its effectiveness. Eliminating nausea and vomiting can help to ensure individuals get the optimum benefit from the medication they take, as well as improving their management of the condition and helping to improve their quality of life.”

Sea-Band® works by exerting constant, gentle pressure on a point on the inner wrist known as the Pericardium 6 (P6) acupressure point. It brings effective relief and can be used before or after the onset of nausea. Sea-Band® has traditionally been used to effectively treat morning sickness, travel sickness and chemotherapy-related nausea4. Drug-free, latex-free Sea-Band® does not cause side effects often associated with anti-nausea medication such as drowsiness, disorientation, dry mouth or possible interactions with other drugs. It’s safe for patients taking prescription medications, pregnant women and children.

Dr Medgyessy said: “This small study indicates the huge potential of Sea-Band® for the 80-90%5 of migraine sufferers who experience nausea. Although there is room for future research, these early results suggest the potential for a new approach to combating migraine-related nausea.”

Sea-Band® is available from Lloydspharmacy, Superdrug, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Morrisons and other pharmacies. The recommended price is £8.15.
