Book review : Children’s Nutrition: A Parent’s Guide - Angela Falaschi & Andréa Childs

******* Don't miss out on my giveaway right here on this blog to win 10 copies of this book ! *****

I recently reviewed (here) the handy guide from Need 2 Know publishers called Travelling with Children (A Parent's Guide), written by Catherine Cooper. They kindly offered me another of their guides for parents, this time about children's nutrition, to review but also to offer in a giveaway.

The book uses the same format as the other book I reviewed (which is presumably the same for all of their guides) with short paragraphs that are easy to dip in and out of and handy "summing up" resumes at the end of each chapter. If you're not keen on reading or just don't have the time, you'll still be able to skim through and find some useful information quickly and simply.

I love the fact that the book covers all stages of childhood, with chapters for each age range : Birth to One, One to Five, Six to Ten and Eleven to Eighteen. So many parents buy baby books and read up on baby weaning then stop worrying about it - myself included ! - so it was really interesting to properly think about the nutritional needs of each stage of childhood. Like most people, I know the basics of good nutrition - five-a-day for fruit and veg, a good breakfast and go easy on the fat and sugar intake - but I always do a "one meal for all the family" approach, whereas 6-year-old Juliette wouldn't have the same needs as 9-year-old Sophie or 21-month-old Pierre, let alone the adults.

I love the case studies about real people that really put things into perspective - the vegetarian child, the boy who didn't like vegetables, the picky eater - as well as the quick tips for, amongst other things, healthy lunch box ideas, exam food or nutritious snacks. The final chapters contain simple but nutritious recipes that use mainly store cupboard basics, categorised into Purées and First Foods, Good Start Breakfasts, Keep Going Lunches, Tasty Family Dinners, Snacks and Treats and 'Medicine Cabinet' Meals - meals using ingredients reputed to help ease or avoid certain common childhood complaints like earache, cold sores or colds.
