Meet Poppy Cat, the newest member of the gang on Nick Jr !

So, who are your preschoolers favourite TV heroes ? Dora the Explorer ? Peppa Pig ? Bob the Builder ? Well, get ready for a new word to enter their vocabulary - Poppy ! Luckily, it's easy for little learners to say !

Poppy Cat is the latest animated show to join the line-up on Nick Jr and, from this month, will be on your screens at 10am every weekday. Each show only lasts for ten minutes so there's no time for your little ones to get bored, and they'll love the magical adventures that Poppy Cat and her band of merry animal friends get up to. The idea of Lara, the little girl, inventing stories for her cat Poppy will also inspire your own kids to get creative and make up stories with their toys which is always a great thing.

The show is based on the beautiful picture books by Lara Jones, which have sold over 2.5 million worldwide. I love the fact that we already had a Poppy Cat book here at The Madhouse before discovering the show so the girls have seen that you can make TV programmes from books as well as the other way round, which they are more used to.

As well as encouraging story-telling, the programme highlights the values of friendship and working together to solve problems. It made me smile to recognise that Joanna Page - best known for playing Stacey in Gavin and Stacey - is the voice behind Poppy Cat. It's a lovely, calm, positive and enchanting programme to sit down and watch with your little ones, who will be enthralled by the stories but also the bright colours and endearing animal characters.

Once your kiddies have become firm fans, they'll love these fab activity packs available to download for free on the Nick Jr website. In the first pack (here), as well as practising word recognition, colouring, observation and writing skills, they show you how to make a funky Poppy Cat space adventure mobile. The second pack (here) is great for younger fans, introducing them to the characters and their names with a series of colouring sheets.

I can't wait for a DVD to come out but until then, 10am on weekdays (when I'm not at work) sounds like a great time for a cuddle and a snack on the settee together !
