Mrs Crimble's Chocolate Coconut Macaroons review

Do you remember cookery classes at primary school ? We always seemed to be making cherry buns, raspberry scones, rock cakes and coconut macaroons ! All of which are things I haven't eaten, let alone made, for years. I did eat some Mrs Crimbles Mini Choc Orange Macaroons back at Christmas (which I reviewed here), but these chocolate-drizzled coconut macaroons have the original taste that mentally transported me back to the lovely warm, bun-smelling cookery room of my schooldays !

What really surprised me was the texture. Sometimes, things made with dessicated coconut are so dry they can make you feel like you've got a mouthful of sawdust but these macaroons are really moist and almost juicy. The chocolate base and drizzles add a real touch of luxury and indulgence and they are big enough to seem like a really decadent treat.

I was also amazed to see that they are gluten-free. The website says : "They make the perfect teatime treat and because they happen to be gluten free they can be enjoyed by coeliacs, or anyone else on a gluten-free diet, as well as everyone else." Great news for all those of you on a restricted diet !

They are quite heavy on the calories - one macaroon contains 197 calories - but there is no way you'd want more than one because they're big enough to be filling and satisfy even the sweetest tooth. I love the fact that they're all a bit irregular and mis-shapen so they look handmade.

They're perfect as a naughty treat with a cup of tea or in front of the telly when you fancy a trip down memory lane. Mrs Crimble's apparently sells more than one of its Chocolate Macaroons every second, making it Britains favourite macaroon. When I first saw the price, I thought they'd made a mistake - they cost £1.29 for 6 so work out at a credit crunch-beating 22p each. And if you still need a reason to try them out, it's National Macaroon Day at the end of the month on 31st May !
