Seriously Good Sauces Butter Chicken review

I've already reviewed some of the Seriously Good sauces before (a review you can see here) and told you how, not only are they recipes developed by Gordon Ramsay, but also 10p goes to Comic Relief for every jar sold. There is a quote from Gordon on each jar which says : “This sauce of mine is seriously good. It tastes fantastic and it helps Comic Relief. Even better, I don't get a penny. Seriously Good Sauce ? Done.”

This time I received a jar of Butter Chicken sauce from the Indian range. Butter Chicken has special memories for us because it is one of the dishes we often ate at Le Khyber, the only (yes, really !) Indian restaurant in Brest in Brittany, where Madhouse Daddy Mike hails from and where we lived when I first moved to France. It's not a dish you often find in ready meals or shop-bought curry sauces so we were hoping for a trip down memory lane. Well, it wasn't bad at all. All that was missing was the cheesy Naans and the even cheesier Indian music in the background !

For those of you who don't know Butter Chicken, it's a mild, creamy sauce similar to a korma or chicken tikka masala in heat so it's great as a family dish or for those who don't like overly spicy food. For a quick and simple meal, you just have to fry some chopped chicken in a little oil, add the jar of sauce and simmer for 15-20 minutes. That's what we did and it made a very tasty and satisfying dish served with rice.

There is also a suggestion for an even tastier dish, which I will be very tempted to try next time. It says that for extra flavour, you can marinate the chicken in 1tsp each of garlic and ginger, ½ tsp chilli powder, the juice of ½ lemon and a pinch of salt. Sounds divine.

The ingredients list reads like a list of store cupboard ingredients rather than a multitude of artificial additives. Tomato puree, double cream, butter, lemon juice, sugar, garlic puree, ginger puree, salt, oil, spices (coriander, garam masala, turmeric, paprika, chilli powder, cardamom, cloves, cumin and oregano). The only ingredients you wouldn't find in my kitchen are maize starch and stabiliser (xanthan gum). Oh, and Gordon Ramsay's talent !

100g of sauce contains 144 calories and 11.1g of fat (a jar contains 350g) which isn't as bad as I expected, given that the main ingredients are tomatoes, double cream and butter !

It really does make a seriously good dinner for two !

Star rating :4.5/5

RRP : £1.99 for 350g

  6. I'm definitely going to get some of this, am often wary of jar sauces tasting nothing like the real thing
