Schwartz review #6 : Perfect Shake Italian spice mix review

Sophie wanted to help make dinner last night when her friend stayed over for a sleepover so we decided to cook up a nice big pan of spaghetti bolognese (or spag bol as it's known in our house !) topped off with lashings of parmesan and grated cheddar.

We had all the ingredients we needed in the cupboard and the fridge - mince, onions, carrots, green pepper, mushrooms, tomatoes, ... And I decided to turn to my trusty Schwartz spices to add a bit of pizazz ! The trouble was, they'd sent me two gorgeous sounding Italian Perfect Shake mixes to try out and I couldn't decide which one to add to the sauce.

First up, Spicy Italian, with the big flakes. The Schwartz website explains : "Perfect Shake Spicy Italian Special Blend with red and green peppers, chillies, garlic and herbs, adds a rich spicy flavour to Italian-style dishes." It contains Red and Green Bell Peppers (33%), Salt, Dried Onion, Flavourings (contains Barley, Wheat), Unrefined Sugar, Dried Garlic (5%), Chilli Powder (Chilli Pepper, Cumin, Salt, Oregano, Garlic), Dried Chillies (4%), Modified Tapioca Starch, Paprika, Parsley, Basil, Garlic Oil and adds a lovely gentle kick. This would also be delicious sprinkled on pizza, garlic bread, cheese on toast or mashed potato.

The other option was Garlic Italian Perfect Shake Blend, which is a much finer spice mix. The ingredients list is : Dried Garlic (43%), Dried Onion, Sugar, Red Bell Peppers, Sea Salt, Oregano (4%), Black Pepper, Basil, Modified Tapioca Starch, Marjoram, Vegetable Oil, Anti-caking Agent (Silicon Dioxide), Garlic Oil. It adds a really nice depth of flavour to sauces and is lovely sprinkled over the Sunday roast or pork chops too.

In the end, I sprinkled a tablespoon of both in which worked really well and really brought the flavours out.
