Bespoke Foods Gingerbread House Kit review

Well, I'm sure you saw our review of the brilliant Decorate Your Own Gingerbread Man kit (here) that Juliette had great fun with. The lovely people at Bespoke Foods also sent us this fabulous Gingerbread House Kit to try out and the girls couldn't wait, begging to be allowed to make it when Sophie's friend Lily came to play.

The gingerbread pieces are all ready to use so there's no need to get cooking beforehand. The girls immediately unpacked the pieces and worked out how they would fit together without even using the detailed instructions on the back of the box.

The bags of ready-to-use icing just need a quick snip at the corner and you have a handy icing tool. Don't forget to set out your base piece of gingerbread on a plate or tray that is easy to move and that you won't need for quite a while because this will look so good, it will stay in the middle of the table for ages before anybody is ready to eat it !

Now an old hand at decorating after making the Gingerbread Man, Juliette set about adding all the Smarties to the roof. (I'm sure I'm supposed to say "chocolate bean sweets" or something instead, but you know what I mean !) The girls were way too excited to wait for the suggested 1/2 hour drying time after building the basic structure for the icing to go hard but it still stayed put.

There were three bags of icing to use and two of them had separated slighly so that the first bit was very runny and the last bit was quite hard so make sure you squish it all around a bit before using it. This didn't happen with the third bag or the bag from the Gingerbread Man kit so it may well not happen though. If you do get a few drips, just say it's snow and ice or cover them up with sweets anyway ! The Christmas tree didn't want to stand up so we used a cocktail stick to add some support behind it.

All three girls had great fun and were really proud of their finished house (as you can see from Juliette's face, in particular) which now has pride of place as our dining table centrepiece. The whole thing only took about an hour to create and produces a really impressive finished product. (Ours doesn't look totally professional but it was done completely by the kids, aged 6, 10 and 11, and I think they did a great job.)
