Book review : Cool Kidz Cakes

Having been challenged to create a Pudsey cake for Children in Need last week – if you haven't seen it yet, you can check out our effort here ! - I first turned for advice and inspiration to a book that we had been sent for review, Cool Kidz Cakes by Elaine Thomas.

Despite showing you how to make extremely impressive cake and sugar dough creations (similar to those that I showed you in a previous blogpost here), it also has some very reassuring and helpful advice for total beginners, including the basic cake recipe and advice on what to do if you make a slight bodge job of cutting the cake !

The final pages of the book have templates that you can photocopy and cut out, as well as 3D cutting diagrams, which are very helpful and easy to follow. The step-by-step instructions on creating the beautifully intricate 3D sugar dough models are clear and precise but, I have to say, I do feel way out of my depth ! They are however a great source of inspiration and they are also ideal for showing to older kids who want to try to create impressive models from their modelling clay !

The book contains ten designs that will appeal to teens, including Diva, Sk8terboy, Pop Star and Games Boy. If you want an artistic challenge or are keen to try making an edible masterpiece for a special birthday, the book would be a great place to start, revealing many essential tricks of the trade and practical advice as well as a multitude of photos to show you how it all comes together.

For now, I'll just be looking at the pictures oohing and aahing though - Pudsey's about my limit !!
