Wii game : Disney Universe review

28th October was my birthday but, as it coincided with the launch of a new game from Disney, it was actually the girls who were showered with presents !

They excitedly ripped open their press packs to discover stickers, sticker albums, posters and Tshirts. They were already seriously impressed.

Then I mentioned that we also had a copy of the game to play on the Wii, if they were up for it. They'd already been trying out the new Skylanders Spyro's Adventure (that we reviewed here) and We Sing UK Hits (that we reviewed here) but as soon as they saw the Disney logo and characters, they couldn't get their Wiimotes out quick enough ! It's been left in the Wii ever since !

The game is a fabulous mix of all the Disney and Pixar characters you can think of in one crazy game. You get to dress up as your favourite characters (Jack Sparrow, Simba, Stitch, Mike from Monsters Inc, Alice in Wonderland or Wall E to name a few) and discover a whole series of Disney-themed worlds. The game starts in Pirates of the Caribbean, which isn't one of the girls' favourite films by far (they find the pirates too scary !) but nevertheless they were instantly hooked.

The game pace is fast and furious, with endless baddies to kill (totally cartoonish and not at all scary), coins to collect and puzzles to solve to progress through the game. At times you'll have to think but it's never unfathomably difficult, even for a 10-year-old playing alone. And if you get killed, you just come straight back in where you left off so there's no frustrating starting again at the beginning of the level and never getting anywhere in the game.

It's a great family game, rated 7+, that everyone can get involved in, kids and adults alike. It can be played alone or with up to three friends which is fabulous news if you have more than one child. Even better news is that Disney plan to expand the game, adding new costumes, locations and characters, so that will keep the players' interest up even when they've almost finished the adventure.

As soon as homework is finished and dinner has been eaten, the inevitable request these days is "Mum, can I play on Disney Universe for a bit before we go to bed ?"!
