Book review : The Onion Presents Christmas Exposed

There's always one - person that you can't think of a suitable present for, that is. So who have you got in your family ? - the man who has everything or the teen who likes nothing ?! Well, either way, this fun festive offering from The Onion could be the perfect jokey gift.

Now, I'd never heard of The Onion but it's apparently America's top satirical magazine. It's a bit like a Stateside version of Private Eye or Have I Got News For You? It reports ludicrous situations in faux-factual newspaper reports that will have you smiling as you have to admit that you recognise some of the people and situations despite the absurdity.

The official blurb says : "Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without impulse-priced holiday gift books - and now 'The Onion' is bringing its signature irreverence to the genre. "Christmas Exposed" features more than one hundred shocking tales of secret Santas, shopping mall mayhem, dysfunctional families, and (don't ask) autoerotic asphyxiation. Readers will discover such hard-hitting coverage, like Child Bored with Christmas Puppy; Weed Delivery Guy Saves Christmas; Jesus Really Dreading This Next Birthday; Man Braves Freezing Weather to Cross Parking Lot."

You'd be forgiven for thinking that at face value, that doesn't sound funny in the slightest and for the first few pages, you probably won't crack a smile. But the more you read, the more you become sucked in by the irreverent style and stupid sense of humour and can't help grinning as you turn the pages.

Whether you're a huge Christmas fan who may laughingly recognise yourself in a few of the situations or a total "Bah Humbug" Christmas-hater who will love the cynical view of the festive season, it's bound to raise a few more laughs than the jokes in the Christmas crackers.
