Children's Book Review : Hide & Seek - Il Sung Na

Hide & Seek is a lovely big hardback book perfect for reading to toddlers who will love looking at the beautiful illustrations as you read the words. The attention to detail and muted colours of the illustrations give the impression that each page is a work of art rather than a brash, over simplified baby-oriented picture.

The story is very simple - the animals in the forest have gathered for a fun game of hide-and-seek - and little learners will love joining in with the counting so it's a great way of practising the numbers from one to ten. They will also love learning the names of new animals, as besides the usual elephant, giraffe and rhino, there are some more unexpected animals like starlings, bushbabies and flamingoes.

Older siblings will enjoy reading the book and even beginner readers shouldn't have too much trouble with the simple text. Everyone can also get involved with trying to spot the chameleon on each page which isn't always easy so adds a really fun, competitive element to storytime !

I'd never heard of Il Sung Na, who hails from Seoul and who is both the author and illustrator, but he has been highly commended in several award lists. At the moment, the book can be snapped up for an amazing £2.97 on amazon so defintely grab it quick as it would make a fabulous Christmas gift for any young children in the family.

  1. Thanks for this, Bud loves animal books so I have just ordered this for him. Not that he needs more books, he has more than the library!

  2. My youngest would love this and my eldest has just started to learn to read so it would be nice if we could all read it together
