Croft Pink Port review

Whilst red suggests passion, pink is said to be the colour of unconditional and romantic love, which is why Croft Pink is being marketed as the drink of choice for St Valentine’s Day. We were sent a bottle to try out.

I have to admit, I'm not a great port drinker. We have a bottle in the drinks' cabinet that invariably gets used for pouring over melon by Madhouse Daddy Mike in the summer but that's about as far as it goes because I find it quite heavy and syrupy. This pink port is a lighter, fresher, more modern version though and it appealed to my tastebuds more.

The description on the bottle says : "Croft Pink is the first ever Port with a beautiful light ruby colour, achieved from light contact with the traditional Port grapes - lighter in style with a unique crisp and fruity flavour, serve chilled in a wine glass for maximum enjoyment".

The tasting notes from Croft explain : "Attractive floral notes underline the pungent, aromatic raspberry fruit aromas. The palate is full of deliciously ripe cherry and raspberry fruit flavours with lovely nuances of honey and grapefruit." I'm not sure I would have been able to pick out specific notes of raspberry, cherry, grapefruit and honey but I did say it tasted of red fruit !

They also say that this port is best served chilled and is an excellent aperitif accompanied by roasted almonds or olives, or as an accompaniment to lighter desserts and fruit. But there are a multitude of cocktails that you could try out using Croft Pink too.

Show your love with a Pink Blossom (that you can see above), a lovingly effervescent cocktail of Croft Pink, St. Germain Elderflower liqueur, sparkling wine and frozen berries (recipe below).  Or be stirred, be shaken, be adventurous and let loose with a Runaway – a spirited blend of Croft Pink, Calvados, Benedictine, lemon juice and Angostura. Spice it up with Pink Cashmere, an exotic blend of Croft Pink with apricot nectar and a gentle kick of black pepper. Get fresh and seductive with an Apple and Pink Julep - a really cool mix of Croft Pink, apple juice and sheaves of mint leaves over mountains of ice. 4. I've never heard of this might just have to try it! Only had the traditional port at Christmas, I do love it but can only have one glass as is quite heavy and sweet. This sounds like a nice option esp. in the pink blossom recipe yum! xx @emymc

  7. This sounds lovely. They're normally Ruby Red - so Pink sounds different. Will give this a go on Valentines Day maybe. Something a bit different.

  8. As an avid port drinker I must say that this pink port has left me unimpressed. Most ports that you can buy even in supermarkets for a reasonable price are at least 10 years old. You can feel the flavour and a myriad of taste notes as you sip them. That's not the case with this (fresh) pink port which feels more like a watered cheap red wine sweetened with artificial sugar. If you are not a port drinker, please do yourself a favour and steer clear from this 'trendy' variety. A big disappointment for my taste buds.....
