Kids' app review : Billie the Unicorn Peek 'n Play Story App

You may have noticed my review last week of the Year of the Dragon Peek 'n Play Story App (here), which got a very warm reception from the Mini-Testers. Well, we received another review code from the same app developers for another Peek & Play interactive storybook app, called Billie The Unicorn.

This is another storybook app that was originally a children's book by Brianne Drouhard and you can really tell this from the moment you set eyes on it. The beautiful illustrations are much richer and more detailed than many other storybook app pictures and the text is charmingly written too.

The plot is not hugely original - "Billie the Unicorn seeks adventure! She leaves her cornfield for the forest where her friendly cousins - Rhubarb and Smudge - grow delightful flowers like magic. Soon Billie learns that gardening takes both skill and love. However, the legend of a Queen's castle, which holds the world's grandest garden, lures Billie away! But will Billie discover that friendship matters the most?" - but the Madhouse mini-testers loved it all the same.

Just like the Year of the Dragon app, you can tap on objects on the screen to make them do things and there is the fun game of spotting the flower on each page (with the option of turning on hints to help find the interactive elements, which is great for younger players). As an educational app for beginner readers, it is also fabulous as you can choose between "read to me" or "read by myself" mode. In the former, words are highlighted which is great for helping with word recognition, and in the latter you can tap on individual words if you get stuck.

It's cute, fun, educational and beautiful to look at - what more could you ask for in a storybook app ?

Look out for a giveaway next week where you will be able to win a code for both apps, Billie the Unicorn and Year of the Dragon, right here on my blog.

  3. This is almost like having Kindle books for children. My phone is never going to mine again with this sort of app.

    1. This is a really old review (from 2012) so I wouldn't be surprised if they've done away with the app now :)
