Aspire Calorie-Burning Drink review

When I heard about new drink Aspire and was given the chance to try some out for myself, I had to check the date to make sure it wasn't an April Fool's Day joke but no, they were a month too early so it couldn't be that ! Nevertheless, the idea of a can of fruity soft drink that would burn 200 calories just by drinking it sounded too good to be true. If it really works, there will be a Nobel Prize for Kindness to Womankind in it for the creators !

When the cans arrived, I was impressed at their stylish, chic appearance but thought they looked very feminine - I'm sure lots of men would be interested in a calorie-burning drink too but may be put off by the girlie packaging.

So on to the all important thing - the taste. I'd seen a few people saying that they didn't like the taste because it tasted of green tea, which is a flavour I'm not keen on, so I wasn't sure I'd like it. I took a sip and, although I could detect a very slight green tea flavour, the strongest flavour was definitely the sharp, fruity taste of the cranberry juice. It's slightly tangy and slightly herbal, but not unpleasant and it grew on me the more I drank.

The way it works is using "a combination of ingredients which create a thermogenic reaction, increasing your metabolism helping you to burn calories" - the label says that it has a high caffeine content, containing 30mg/100ml so one 250ml can contains 75mg of caffeine. That's about what you'd get in a standard sized coffee, according to the website. It didn't have the horrible sharp, artificial taste that many energy shot type drinks have, and it didn't make me feel hyperactive or "buzzy".

Aspire has been tested by a leading British laboratory and is proven to burn an average of 209 calories per can. It sounds too good to be true but I'm really hoping to be proven wrong ! The website explains : "Potentially you will burn 209 calories (Kcals) every time - it is dependent on your metabolic rate which is determined by your age, your weight and even the time of day."  They also say that it is recommended that you drink no more than 4 cans a day - they suggest that you can enjoy Aspire in the morning to kick start your metabolism, to accompany a healthy lunch, whilst on the go, in the office or before going to the gym. They also say that there are various ways to enjoy it - over ice or even with a splash of champagne, for example !

After eating healthy, low-calorie Jenny Craig meals for the past month, I went back to the school canteen yesterday and was gutted to see that on the menu it was omelette and chips, followed by a Mars ice cream bar - really light and healthy (NOT !). I therefore drank a can of Aspire when I got home and today, my weight was the same, whereas I was fully expecting it to go up. Obviously, I'd need a longer trial to be sure that it is the Aspire doing its stuff, but I was pleasantly surprised by the taste and reassured and impressed by the scientific explanations on the website.

If you want to try losing or maintaining your weight with minimum effort, it's definitely worth a try. Even as a low-calorie drink, it makes a pleasant change to diet coke (although it is much more expensive at about £1.75 per can) so anything above that is an added bonus. One can also contains 50 per cent of your recommend daily allowance of vitamins, which is another non-negligeable advantage. The only off-putting thing is the price but, if you buy a case of 24 cans for £33.99, that works out slightly lower at £1.42 a can. Keep your eyes open as I expect there will be lots of introductory offers at the moment to try to get people to try it. This is something I would definitely buy over the Christmas period or if you're going to a wedding or somewhere where you know that you're going to over-indulge. I'll be keen to see people try it over a longer period - for example, a whole month - to see if it has any effect on their weight, as the laboratory trials would seem to suggest.

star rating : 4.5/5

200 of those calories burnt are background calories that the body burns naturally anyway
