Wii game review : Mario Party 9

The Madhouse Mini-testers were over the moon when I told them that we'd be getting a Mario Party 9 pack to review.

They got even more excited when they saw what the postie delivered - a copy of the game to play on the Wii along with a hilarious Mario hat to wear while playing it ! There was also a party kit with invite templates, balloons, cake recipes and games to make your own Mario hats and bunting, which we will definitely be using for our next birthday party here at The Madhouse.

But on to the main event - the game itself. Sophie already knew all about it because she said all her friends at school had been talking about it. Everybody has apparently been saying that it is much better than Mario Party 8, but as we haven't played that one, we can't compare. We can tell you that we had a lot of fun playing Mario Party 9 though !

The game is based around the concept of a board game but all players share a vehicle so all get moved along at the same time whoever's turn it is. This means that there is no boring waiting around for your turn, as you're constantly on the move, and it also adds an element of strategy because, if you're so minded, you can use your cunning to get players to land on squares where they really don't want to be !

The game includes 80 brand new Mini-games, all calling on your skill, coordination, reflexes and sheer luck, that will find you doing all sorts of things from making pizzas and escaping haunted mansions to racing snowmobiles. You will all sometimes have to work together too to defeat the big Boss but even then, things remain competitive because the player who gets the most hits in wins the most little stars. The games feature all of our favourite Mario characters from the Mushroom Kingdom, as well as introducing a few characters which are completely new to the Mario Party series.

Sophie has been playing it on her own and having fun but it really comes into its own as a multiplayer game. The great thing is, the mini games are accessible to (and enjoyable for) people of all ages so it's a great game for the whole family to play together.

  3. Thank you so much for the review! I want to have a Mario themed birthday party, that’d be so cool! My kids are waiting for this game to come out, luckily I ran across it on Blockbuster @Home. They have seen the previews and all their friends are talking about it. I don't buy games anymore, they are too expensive. Since I started working at Dish, we have the BB @H package and we are definitely into renting video games more. The kids don't mind anyways because they only play the game until they get bored. So now with BB @H we can keep a game as long as we want without any late fees and then return it for a whole new game! After reading your review I can't wait for Mario Party 9.
