Dentyl Active Mouth Wash review

If asked to come up with an adjective to describe mouthwash, you might possibly come up with "functional"  but I would be very surprised if you said "funky". That, however, is the word that instantly sprang to my lips when I laid eyes on the bottle of Dentyl Active Mouth Wash that we received to review. Before you think I've gone totally mad, have a closer look at the picture.

This is the only mouthwash I've ever seen that settles into two differently coloured layers. It reminds me of a lava lamp or those strangely hypnotising sand mountain things that were all the rage in the eighties. (Oooh I'd forgotten all about those, I wonder if they still exist ! It was a thin glass rectangular frame filled with viscous liquid and a few air bubbles with black sand that would trickle down to make random mountain shapes. Ooh they do still exist - you can buy them here ! This is not a disguised sponsored post, I hasten to add - it's the only mention I could find of them when I went for a "blast from the past" search on google ! And those permanently clicking ball things - remember those ?! I've just discovered that they were called Newton's Cradles or Newton's Balls ! Oh if only I'd known that back in the 80's when my uncle had one on his coffee table - all those puns I could have made about him playing with Newton's Balls !)

But I digress ! Back to the funky mouthwash ! The first thing you have to do is shake the bottle to mix up the two layers. This makes it go all sparkly and bubbly with really fine bubbles which also looks very pretty and made Sophie say that it looked like one of Harry Potter's potions !

But it's not just supposed to be aesthetically pleasing and remind you of yuppie gadgets from your youth ! It's actually really clever because it is the only mouthwash that is designed so that you can visibly see it working because it highlights the plaque and debris in the sink. The manufacturers explain on their website : "Dentyl Active is the original two phase mouthwash. The two phases are oil and water based and when you 'Shake to Activate', the two layers combine to create a cationic reaction to attract bacteria and food particles. This cationic reaction helps bind the ingredients to bacteria and food particles more than the typical mouthwash to really deep clean your mouth. You can then visibly see the food particles and bacteria in the sink, proof it's really working!"

Well, it's really weird but I never get any bits coming out of my mouth ! This morning, I brushed my teeth and used the mouthwash and nothing showed up in the sink. Sophie brushed her teeth and swished it around her mouth and spat and loads of little purple bits showed up in the sink. So tonight, I decided to use it before brushing my teeth - still nothing showed up ! My dentist does always say to me that my teeth are in good condition and that I don't even need a polish because there's no plaque. Very strange and, to be honest, if I hadn't seen it working with Sophie, I'd have probably thought it was a con ! (Update - if I use it first thing in the morning before brushing my teeth, I do get a few purple bits in the sink - success !!)

The mouthwash has a fresh minty flavour, that reminds me of chewing gum, but it isn't eye-wateringly strong like most mouthwashes because it doesn't contain alcohol. Dentyl Active Enamel Restore has double the fluoride of almost every other mouthwash on the market which helps repair and mineralise your teeth to protect them from acidic food and drink. This made me wonder about all those people claiming that too much fluoride is not good but the manufacturers say that the product's fluoride level is within professionally recommended quantities to avoid problems with fluorosis.

To be honest, it probably doesn't work any better than most of the other mouthwash products that you can buy but it does make it all a bit more exciting and fun, which has to be a good thing if it helps encourage good oral hygiene habits. And it does look incredibly funky on the side of the bathroom sink !

  2. I have tried this before and I had the cherry one but I though it tasted a bit weird! I will give this flavour a try, but not at the moment, I am struggling at the moment because I just had wisdom tooth out and my mouth is all swollen!

    1. Ow not good :( This does taste different to other mouthwashes, it's minty but more of a chewing gum flaour than the intense blast of strong mint you usually get.

  3. You'Re lucky not to have plaque! I tried this mouthwash before, and I did see the little bits... I like it, but I would only buy it on offer, it's kinda expensive!

  4. This did encourage our kids to brush their teeth more as they liked using the mouthwash afterwoods, only problem was it was proving a little expensive for a family of 6 so I keep forgetting to put it in the basket now ;-)

  9. Would look good in the bathroom. I don't use mouthwash though. If you've brushed your teeth I don't see why you need it.

  10. Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice that involves swishing oil around in your mouth for a specified period, typically around 15-20 minutes, before spitting it out. While traditionally done with coconut or sesame oil, modern variations have emerged, including products like the Oral Spa Elixir from the brand Forest Elixirs. This innovative oil pulling mouthwash claims to be very beneficial for dental health and offers a unique experience by not leaving an oily feeling in the mouth. In this article, we will explore the benefits of oil pulling and delve into the specifics of this new product.
