Discovery Crispy Crumb Coating review


We eat fajitas quite regularly here at The Madhouse. The kids love the idea of making their own meal on their plate, putting in exactly what they like, rolling it up and eating it with their fingers with bits falling out all over the place, and I love the fact that I can actually sneak in quite a lot of vegetables (onions, tomatoes, red and green peppers, mushrooms) without them noticing ! I have to admit, I wasn't sure about using Discovery's Crispy Crumb Coating in fajitas though, but that was what was on the front of the pack so we decided to give it a go !


The pack contains what looks like breadcrumbs and reminded me of the Southern Fried Chicken coating that we sometimes buy. It's made with maize and rice and the pack says that it can be used with chicken, fish and vegetables. I personally wouldn't have put it with fish but it would be lovely with other meats such as pork and beef. It's gluten-free which is fab news for any Coeliacs out there.



The instructions say to put the chopped chicken in a bowl, toss with the crispy crumb coating and lay out the pieces on a baking sheet. I decided to minimise the washing up (to be eco-friendly, not through sheer laziness obviously !!) by putting the chicken in an ovenproof dish, mixing it all up to be evenly coated then spreading it out so it's all on one layer. It probably didn't become quite as crispy as it would have done on a baking sheet but it was still lovely.

You can smell and taste the Mexican spices as soon as you open the pack - the ingredients list includes cumin, Cayenne pepper and oregano - but it's purposely kept mild so that it will appeal to the whole family. Anyone who wants a bit more heat can easily sprinkle over some chilli though.

We served the coated chicken in wraps as Crispy Chicken Fajitas, as suggested on the pack, with Iceberg lettuce, chopped tomatoes and soured cream, and they were very nice. I have to say I do prefer the normal fajitas we make (using the regular Fajitas seasoning) but the kids preferred these ones, because the chicken is less spicy, and I love the fact that you could make these in advance for a picnic or packed lunch and eat them cold. The kids also finished off the leftover chicken with rice for tea and said that that went really well together too.

You may notice the lack of photo of the finished fajitas. Well, I fully intended on taking a picture of the cooked chicken or the ready-to-eat fajitas but by the time I got to the table after heating the last tortillas, it had pretty much all disappeared - which I guess says more than a photo would have done anyway !

For 1 serving (which is 1/8th of the 85g pack), the coating contains 35 calories, 0.2g fat and 0.93g of sodium expressed as salt.

  1. I wonder if this would work with vegetarian 'pretend' meat? I like the Quorn fajita strips and chicken style products. I reckon it's worth a go since the consistency and cooking time is similar for quorn and soya.

  7. We also eat alot of Fajitas in this house and we always use the same seasoning each week so maybe I should give this one a try especially as your kids think it is less spicy which is the reason my kids would probably prefer it.
