Heinz Barbecue Sauce recipe #2 : Barbecue Chicken and Bacon Pizza

The kids have been getting well into the Heinz Barbecue Sauce Cooking Challenge, loving the Marinated Chicken Wings (that we made here) and asking when we can try the Ultimate Barbecue Baked Beans, so I think I'll have to try out some of the other recipes from the Heinz website - or just add a quick squirt of sauce to random meals before serving them to the kids to see what works !!

Today's recipe challenge was for Barbecue Chicken and Bacon Pizza which I was really looking forward to trying because the kids always love making homemade pizza and choosing their own toppings. (Especially when we make out trademark Madhouse Mouse Pizza !)

Here's one Heinz made earlier !

And the recipe, if you want to try it at home :

 Barbecue Chicken and Bacon Pizza

Serves: 4

Other toppings that work well with Heinz Sticky Barbecue sauce are peppers, mushrooms, pepperoni and ham

Ingredients:

● 1 x 20cm thin pizza base
● 2 tbsp Heinz Sticky Barbecue sauce
● 1/4 red onion, sliced
● 1/2 skinless cooked chicken breast, sliced
● 2 rashers cooked back bacon, trimmed of fat
● 25g light mozzarella, ripped into pieces
● 20g reduced fat hard cheese, grated
● Small handful of rocket leaves

Method:

● Spread the pizza base with 1 1/2 tablespoons of Heinz Sticky Barbecue sauce and top with the red
onion, chicken and bacon.

● Finish with the mozzarella and cheese and bake in a preheated 220C, fan 200C, gas 7 for 12-14 minutes
until golden.

● Serve drizzled with the remaining Heinz Sticky Barbecue sauce and top with rocket leaves.

As I needed to cook the chicken breast and bacon, I decided to precook the onions and mushrooms too before adding them to the pizza. This was actually a really good idea because they were softer and less dried out so the kids preferred them.

The ingenious thing about this pizza is replacing the tomato puree with barbecue sauce, which gives it an unexpected smoky flavour that works really well with the other ingredients.

I decided to add some sweetcorn to sneak another one of their five-a-day in there.

Juliette got a bit over-enthusiastic with the "adding the grated cheese" part ! Oh well, it's all calcium !

Tada !

The kids' verdict ? "That's the best pizza we've ever made" ! We'll definitely be trying this one again then !

  2. Oh yum! I love home made pizza, but tend to stick to a boring ham & cheese topping, this sounds fab. And I know exactly where Juliette was coming from, you need lots of cheese on a pizza, otherwise it doesn't taste right!

Cheryl, this looks lovely. I might get the kids to have a go at this on Monday (it looks like rain for the Bank Holiday again so we might have a family cooking afternoon!) I think your pizza looks much nicer than the one in the Heinz picture - theirs is too thin and stingy on the toppings!
