Ozbozz Raskullz kids' helmets review

How gorgeous is this ?! (And before you say it's too big, she's looking down so that she can really show off the unicorn design!) It may be the most beautiful thing you've ever laid eyes on (especially if, like Juliette, you're a 7-year-old girl !) but it's not just funky, it's also incredibly functional because it's one of the innovative new range of children's cycling helmets from Ozbozz called Raskullz. Ozbozz had already impressed me with their My First Scooter that we reviewed many moons ago here - I love the way they manage to crawl inside a child's mindspace and create a product that appeals to kids as much as parents. Well, they've done it again with Raskullz.

I must admit, when I first saw the picture of the Unicorn helmet online, I did have a moment of doubt about the safety of the design. I thought that the horn and ears could cause more harm than good in the event of a serious fall. However, I needn't have worried. They are totally soft and pliable, made of a bendy rubberised material.

If you're thinking it looks lovely but you've got a little boy, don't panic - they don't only have girly-girly designs. You can also choose between this very fetching Shark, a unisex Ladybird design or a punk Mohican, which would probably appeal to slightly older children and tweens as well.

Gwen Stefani's son has been spotted out and about wearing one of the Mohican Raskullz in fact but the designs are so appealing to kids that they won't need the celebrity endorsement to think they're really cool !

The aesthetic aspect isn't the only one that's important though. The helmets feature a foam and EPS inner shell, an adjustable chin strap and instructions to ensure a safe fit. You may have noticed almost-3-year-old Pierre wearing it when he tried out his brand new My First Motorbike balance bike (that we just reviewed here) but this was just for posing for the photo. The Raskulls helmets are designed for children aged 5 years+ and have a sizing of 52cm-56cm. Juliette is 7 but she must have a small head because hers it a bit on the big size. I did find the straps a bit fiddly to adjust too, so I may not have done it quite right. I'll get Madhouse Daddy Mike to have a look and see if he can tighten it any more.

If you have a child who is into cycling, skateboarding, roller skating or riding around at top speed on a scooter, they are absolutely perfect. Be warned though - they're so pretty and comfortable that you'll probably have to wait until bedtime or bathtime until you can convince your child to actually take it off ! Juliette wore hers around the house all afternoon despite not going anywhere near anything on wheels !
