Making the most of the Nintendo 3Ds - exciting opportunities and competitions !

I told you recently (here) that we were over the moon to be sent a Nintendo 3DS and it's been getting a thorough roadtesting lately. We already had a Nintendo 3DS Lite so the big bonus of this device is the 3D feature. I mentioned in my original blogpost that I wasn't keen on it to begin with, finding it a bit blurry and strange. Well, since then, playing around with the different levels of 3D-ness and getting used to the 3D visuals, I am now actually starting to appreciate it more. Sophie loves it and has taken some really funky 3D photos of members of The Madhouse with it. It's something that takes a while to get used to and to really get to grips with, so these exciting opportunities to get involved in professional, not to mention celeb, photo field trips and competitions are brilliant - definitely not to be missed if you have a Nintendo 3DS. 3D Photography Competition

Entering the Nintendo 3DS photography competition couldn’t be simpler. Take a 3D photo in-line with one of the six themes, using the in-built cameras on the Nintendo 3DS system. Once you have captured your masterpiece, upload it to the dedicated competition website www.nintendo.co.uk/3dphotocontest between 2nd April 2012 and 17th June 2012 via the browser on the Nintendo 3DS. Although you must submit your entry via the Nintendo 3DS, you may also visit the dedicated competition website via your PC or tablet device to view galleries of all the images submitted from across Europe. Each photo uploaded to the website will have its own dedicated QR Code and, by reading these QR Codes on the Nintendo 3DS system, users will be able to view their favourite images in 3D. 

Recent research from Nintendo found that 60% of Nintendo 3DS owners take more than 100 photos a year* and 13% take as many as 1,000, which equates to three a day*. So say “cheese” and get capturing using the in-built cameras on the Nintendo 3DS system today!

 

The Nintendo 3DS features two outer-facing and one inner-facing camera, allowing you to take both 2D and 3D photos, and record up to 10 minutes of 3D video footage. Photos taken using the Nintendo 3DS cameras can be customised by adding fun and creative filters and effects.  You can even draw on your photos using the Nintendo 3DS stylus to give them that personal touch.

3D Video Short Film Competition

Under this exciting new partnership the BFI and Nintendo are launching a short film-making competition using the 3D video recorder built in to the Nintendo 3DS. Entrants are encouraged to use the innovative technology of the Nintendo 3DS to create short films that capture the imagination and showcase the still-evolving art of 3D videography, one of the major innovations to the entertainment industry of the last decade. The winner will have the opportunity to have their work shown to some of the most prominent people in the film industry at the Nintendo Gala screening at the 56^th BFI London Film Festival In Partnership With American Express in October 2012.

 

Nintendo UK Managing Director David Yarnton said of the partnership: "We are extremely excited to be working with the BFI to provide a platform for future 3D film-making talent to showcase their work.”

Nintendo UK is excited to announce ANOTHER DIMENSION, a series of special events and an interactive gallery exhibition, to celebrate the Europe-wide 3D photography competition that is currently underway.

 

Taking place in June will be a series of intimate photography field trips hosted by a range of high profile names, including one of Britain’s best-loved nature enthusiasts, Bill Oddie, and members of The Saturdays. Work created during these unique trips will then be exhibited alongside the best 3D photography work from the competition, within a special pop-up installation created by acclaimed artist Graham Hudson.

 

Taking in themes of People, Places, Animals, Augmented Reality and Objects, members of the public will be invited to take part in memorable and inspiring experiences, led by some of the UK’s best known and engaging personalities. Together with the opportunity to visit interesting places on a unique day out, they will also learn how to take 3D photographs using Nintendo 3DS consoles, to create a series of fun and eye-catching images, which will be entered into the 3D competition. Each field trip will also be attended by a member of the Royal Photographic Society who will be on hand to teach people about how to take high quality 3D photographs on their Nintendo 3DS. A unique opportunity to be taken on an intimate, visual adventure by a host of high profile names, the ANOTHER DIMENSION field trips are free and open to the public, and will be filled on first-come, first served basis, by signing up to photocomp@nintendo.co.uk

15 JUNE: A TRIP TO THE ZOO WITH BILL ODDIE (Battersea Park Zoo, London)

 

The best of the photographs created during the field trips will also be featured as part of a giant installation at The Loading Bay Gallery, The Old Truman Brewery, Dray Walk off Brick Lane, E1 6QL from 6 - 8 July.

 

The exhibition will be created by the award-winning artist Graham Hudson, who will build a large-scale architectural sculpture created from scaffolding, to house the 3D images. Having exhibited at London’s Zabludowicz Collection, Auto Italia, Saatchi Gallery, Seventeen Gallery and a host of international gallery spaces, as well as being featured at the Frieze Sculpture Park in 2009, and creating commissions for Comme des Garcons, Hudson was also shortlisted for W Hotels’ Designers of the Future Award at DesignMiami in 2010.

 

The Nintendo 3DS Photography Competition has been launched in association with National Geographic Kids, famed for its exceptional wildlife photography, and the world’s oldest national photographic society, The Royal Photographic Society (RPS).

 

Competition entries are split into six dedicated categories, so no matter what you love to shoot, there’s a theme to suit you. The categories include: Animals, People, Places, Objects, Plants and Augmented Reality, which fully utilises the Augmented Reality features of the Nintendo 3DS system. The photo entries will be judged by an expert panel, including Tim Herbert, features editor of National Geographic Kids magazine, and Dr Michael Pritchard, Director General at the RPS.  The most promising photographer will win the top prize of a trip for two to Paris and a photography masterclass, while lucky runners-up will be awarded Nintendo goodies in recognition of their skill.

 

 

ANOTHER DIMENSION Field trips

All Nintendo 3DS Photography field trips are free to attend, but places are limited and will be allocated in advance on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

To apply for places, people should email photocomp@nintendo.co.uk with their contact details and the field trip they are interested in attending. Successful applicants will be notified, with further details of the activities.  Applicants must be over 18 or accompanied by an adult to attend.
