Bakerdays cake by post review

I still can't quite believe that my little man was 3 years old on Tuesday - where's my baby gone?! In honour of the occasion, Bakerdays kindly sent us through one of their personalised birthday cakes to review.

It arrives in a sturdy box specially designed to fit through the letterbox, inside which is a tin containing the cake. Despite coming in the mail, it arrived in perfect condition !

Pierre couldn't quite get his head around getting a cake delivered by the postman especially when he opened it up and saw that it had a photo of him on it ! But as we'd received one of the small cakes - enough for about 4-6 people - we packed it away until the actual day, when it would just be the five of us, because it wouldn't have been big enough to share with Nanny, Grandad and Auntie Em who were visiting for the day.

Sure enough, when the big day came around, Pierre was bouncing around with excitement at the prospect of eating "his cake" ! We got the funky smiley candles out again and sang Happy Birthday for the second time !

Because he's such a big boy now (as he keeps reminding us!), he managed to blow out his three candles all by himself.

You can see how much he loved seeing his face on the cake ! I was impressed at the bright colours of the design and the clarity of the image. It's also totally personalised, with the name, age and photo to prove that this was definitely Pierre's cake and nobody else's !

I sliced it into five portions and discovered a moist chocolate cake underneath. The icing is easy to cut without breaking up and it's soft and tasty, not sickly sweet like some icing.

The proof of the pudding cake is in the eating and, as Pierre's cheeky-chops face shows (and the totally clean plates afterwards !), it got a thumbs up from every member of The Madhouse !

Looking on the website, I was impressed to see that you can choose from over 300 designs, 6 cake recipes and dozens of occasions, from retirement to Thank You Teacher to congratulations. The standard cake recipe is Madeira but you can upgrade to lemon cake, carrot cake, fruit cake, double choc chip or - a very handy addition in my opinion - gluten and wheat free cake, for a supplement.

The only downside is the price. For the small 4-5 portion cake (with a 12cm diameter and 2.5cm thickness) that we received, prices start at £14.99 (we had the double choc chip which costs £2 extra) or you can get a  8-16 portion party cake (16cm diameter, 3cm thickness) for £26.99. For very special occasions or awkward to buy for relatives at Christmas and birthdays (and having seen just how excited Pierre got when he received his !), I may well be tempted to buy one though, especially as they are delivered free all over the UK.

star rating : 4.5/5

RRP : from £14.99

    2. Fingers crossed for your Sunday weigh in. I've stuck to mine so far this week and done lots of walking so if I can just keep it up, I might have a good weigh in for a change. x
