Harumika review

Harumika is described as "an award winning, unique, fun and easy to use toy that combines art and craft as well as fashion" and it's been a big hit with budding fashionistas since its launch in 2009. Needless to say, when the opportunity arose to review a kit, 10-year-old Sophie leapt at the chance.

When it arrived, she excitedly unpacked the contents of the box - the mannequin's dummy, the tool for pushing the material into the slit in the back, three squares of different fabrics, a length of ribbon, a strip of gold lace, a sheet of adhesive accessories (including a watch, which made Sophie laugh because the body hasn't got arms !) and a little sheet of jewel stickers.

The only other things you need are some creativity and imagination to get designing. There's no sewing, pinning or sticking involved - you just wrap the material around the mannequin and push the excess into the slit at the back to hold it in place. It actually works really well, holding it perfectly, but also allowing you to pull it out and start all over again as many times as you like.

Sophie made several designs within a matter of minutes but was particularly pleased with this one. She said that it would be great if we could buy some more kits to add extra materials to her fashion stash, then her eyes came out on stalks when I pulled out my patchwork box and said she have anything she wanted from that ! That's the beauty of Harumika - although it's nice to buy the extra kits with the glittery jewels and special accessories, you can actually use any old scraps of fabric that you have lying around the house to create designs. I have said that we'll buy some more mannequins though, so that we can show off the designs and make several at a time.

star rating : 4.5/5

RRP : various prices from £7.99 depending on the size of the kit

Harumika is available now from Argos, Asda, Entertainer, John Lewis, Smyths, Tesco, Toymaster, Toys R Us and other good toy stores.
