Domestos and UNICEF join forces in sanitation campaign

You may remember that a few weeks ago, I reviewed Domestos toilet-cleaning products. I'd been mightily miffed that my toilet was covered in stubborn limescale so looked constantly dirty. After zapping it with Domestos, I was over the moon to go from this ...

to this ...

But, having read about Domestos and UNICEF's new partnership, I actually felt a bit guilty about my toilet lament. For many people in the world, they don't have a toilet at all, clean or otherwise.

UNICEF explain : "Across the world, sanitation is a matter of life and death. Currently 2.5 billion people do not have access to basic toilets, and every day an estimated 3,000 children die from diarrhoea caused by poor sanitation.

In South Sudan, a country with one of the worst access rates to sanitation facilities in the world, less than 10 per cent of the population use a toilet or latrine.
"It is completely wrong that billions of people across the world still don’t have access to the most basic toilet," said David Bull, UNICEF UK Executive Director.
"Poor sanitation leads to illness, causes children, especially girls, to miss out on school, and in many cases leads to death. It shouldn’t be like this." "
This new partnership will give an estimated 400,000 people across nine countries - Gambia, Ghana, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, South Sudan, Sudan and Vietnam - access to safe toilets and hygiene facilities.
From the start of July to the end of September 2012, 5% of the proceeds from special bottles of Domestos on sale in Sainsbury’s in the UK will be donated to UNICEF’s sanitation work in Vietnam and South Sudan.
But that's just one thing you can do to get involved. You can also help by:
