Picture book review : Tamara Small and the Monsters' Ball - Giles Paley-Phillips

It's that time of the year when monsters and ghouls and things that go bump in the night are on everyone's minds as Halloween comes around again. We have just discovered the perfect bedtime reading for the Madhouse Mini-testers - Tamara Small and the Monsters' Ball by Giles Paley-Phillips, who also wrote The Fearsome Beastie which had us squealing in delight and giggling when we reviewed it last year.

As I said in my last review, I love the way Giles plays with your expectations and throws in surprises as the story unfolds. In this tale, on a dark spooky night, Tamara Small is snatched by a big hairy monster ... who whisks her off to a monsters' ball where she has a great time boogying with the breakdancing werewolves and chachacha-ing witches ! I loved watching the surprise on Pierre's face as he listened to the story and heard things he totally wasn't expecting, going from looking vaguely worried to having a broad smile on his face.

The first thing that had them in hysterics though was that we all think that Tamara Small is the splitting image of Juliette ! Have a look at the pictures below to see if you agree !

If you want a cute and not scary fun-read for Halloween, this is ideal for young children who will have a great time discovering the fabulous, brightly-coloured illustrations as you read the verses to them.
