Kids' DVD review : Daddy, I'm A Zombie !

With perfect timing for both Halloween and half term, Lionsgate sent us through a copy of their latest family-friendly release called Daddy, I'm a Zombie!.

This feature-length animated movie tells the story of Dixie, a teenage girl who suddenly finds herself transformed into a zombie and has to befriend an Egyptian mummy princess called Isis and a pirate cabin boy called Gonner to defeat the evil witch Nubulosa. OK, so it's not a very believable storyline but I think that actually helps make it all a bit less scary for young viewers because they realise it's not supposed to be real life.

The film is rated PG which sounds about right. 3-year-old Pierre and 7-year-old Juliette hid behind their hands a few times but it's not scary enough to give them nightmares or really worry them, and they had lots of giggles too. I kept asking if they thought it was scary and they said no every time. But the storyline and atmosphere is quite dark and spooky, very reminiscent of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The film has some nice touches - I like the allusion to bullying, friendship and standing together to overcome challenges - and it's the perfect film to watch together as a family on a cold, wet Sunday afternoon in October or November.

star rating : 4/5

RRP : £6.99

run time : 79 minutes

release date : 1st October 2012
