Fireman Sam Safety Advice for Bonfire Night

This year, Fireman Sam - the hero next-door for generations of youngsters - is fronting a National Bonfire Night Safety Campaign and I have to say, he's the logical choice. Anything that can help get the safety message across has to be a good thing so please take a moment to share Sam's top tips with your children, especially if they are fans of the series.

Bonfire Dos and Don'ts

•             Site bonfire well away from houses, garages, sheds, fences, overhead cables, trees and shrubs AND ALWAYS AWAY FROM FIREWORKS.
•             Build the bonfire stack so that it is stable and never light with flammable liquids.
•             Keep everyone away from the fire, especially children who must be supervised at all times, and pets who are best kept indoors.
•             In case of an emergency, keep buckets of water, the garden hose or a fire extinguisher ready.
•             Pour water on the embers before leaving.

Firework Dos and Don'ts

•             Keep fireworks in a closed metal box and take them out one at a time.
•             Follow the manufacturer's instructions on each firework. Read them by torchlight - NEVER a naked flame.
•             Light fireworks at arm's length using a safety firework lighter or fuse wick. NEVER go back to a lit firework.
•             Always wear gloves when handling sparklers and hold at arm’s length. Once finished, put in a bucket of water.
•             Never give sparklers to children under 5.

  1. Fab post! Thanks for posting this.
Also, remember to check bonfires for hedgehogs before lighting them. Many hedgehogs will hibernate in a bonfire before it's lit resulting in many hedgehog deaths :(

    1. I think it's really clever of them to get a kids' hero to pass on a safety message - much more effective than if it's the parents saying it.

  3. Thanks for posting these Tips. I think an important one is to stay far back from fireworks. A friend got burned once as a rocket flew off sideways.

  5. Fireman Sam was on breakfast television aswell with this advice, brilliant to see a well loved character getting the message across. I heard on our local radio of an 11 year old suffering really bad burns to his face and hands after playing with fireworks just a few days ago it really is scary!

  6. This was fabulous for sharing with my daughter before Bonfire Night as she is a huge Fireman Sam fan, and I am paranoid about keeping her safe at this time of year. I know how dangerous fireworks can be, as my best friend had horrific burns following an awful accident. A fantastic, child friendly post.
