Kids' Audio Book Review : Myro Arrives in Australia - Nick Rose

Myro the Smallest Plane in the World is a little English microlight who gets involved in lots of fun adventures,  not to mention scrapes, after heading all the way to the other side of the world to Australia. Pierre had never heard of him before but, as a fan of Thomas the Tank Engine, Cars and Bob the Builder, he's very familiar with the idea of talking vehicles with faces so he immediately adopted him.

The exciting thing about this book for Pierre is that it is an audio-book. The accompanying CD has Myro's song as well as the story, narrated by the inimitable Christopher Biggins. Despite many an hour misspent in my youth watching Neighbours and Home & Away once if not twice a day, my Australian accent isn't up to much so I was glad to let Biggins do the voices for me !

Pierre loved turning the pages, although I did have to keep reading silently along with him so that I could tell him when it was time to turn to the next page. He happily looked at the brightly coloured pictures, pointing out the different characters and listening intently to the story. He particularly loved the Routemaster bus because he remembered seeing one on our daytrip to London back in the summer !

I love the way the book introduces little learners to various aspects of Australia, including the landscape and wildlife, as well as teaching them all sorts of facts about aircraft - often sadly overlooked in favour of trains when it comes to children's books and TV heroes. The stories are fun and Myro is a really appealing character so I'm sure we'll be buying more books featuring him in the future. Fingers crossed he'll get his own TV show too - it would be perfect for CBeebies !

  1. I agree this would make a nice change to reading books about trains to my little boy!
