The Prima Princessa presents The Nutcracker DVD review

7-year-old Juliette is a bit of a tomboy. She likes watching Angelina Ballerina and dressing up as a princess but she's more likely to be seen charging around the park and rolling down muddy banks than going to a ballet class. I was therefore keen to see what she would make of The Prima Princessa presents The Nutcracker that we received on DVD to review.

Well, you may be surprised to learn that she loved it. She said that it was like a real life version of her Dora Does Ballet DVD and really loved the fact that it features real children doing ballet, as well as excerpts of a professional performance by Birmingham Royal Ballet and a cartoon ballerina to explain the storyline so young viewers will understand what's going on. It may sound hectic but it actually works really well.

This is the first time that The Prima Princessa has made it to Europe but it apparently appears annually on most public television stations in America during the Christmas season. The series was created by two American mums of dance-mad daughters and is specifically designed to expose 3-6 year old children to classical ballet through a fun interactive, animated and educational experience, where they are encouraged to get up and dance along. I couldn't help smiling because that is exactly what 3-year-old Pierre does every time it's on - Billy Elliot, eat your heart out !!

If you have a child who is properly interested in ballet, it's brilliant because it will teach you key moves and explain the technical terms, but if your daughter (or son) just has a passing interest and is more interested in twirling and jumping around the living room copying the ballerinas without really worrying too much about the correct way of doing things, they'll still get a lot out of it.

Don't by-pass the bonus content as it's really rather good, especially in the run up to Christmas - you can watch Holiday Freeze Dancing, Holiday Party with Gingerbread House Decorating and fun Christmas Crafts. If you're put off by Americanised kids' DVDs, you'll be pleased to know that the Prima Princessa DVD has been recreated for the UK market with a British accent.

Don't go away if you fancy finding out more - I'll be back in a second with a giveaway where you can win your very own copy of the DVD.
