Chocolate-free Easter gifts review

Chick, chick, chick, chick, chicken,
Lay a little egg for me!
Chick, chick, chick, chick, chicken,
I want one for my tea,
I haven’t had an egg since Easter,
And now it’s half past three,
So, chick, chick, chick, chick, chicken,
Lay a little egg for me!

Yes, there's no getting away from it, the Easter Bunny will soon be here, hiding calorie-laden treats all over the house for you and the kids to scoff your way through. If you want a sugar and calorie-free alternative for an Easter gift, you might like some of these ideas. We received a selection of Easter-themed (think bunnies, chicks and little lambs) toys to review and they were all really well received by the Madhouse Mini-testers. I asked them what they would think if they received a toy rather than a chocolate egg for Easter and they actually surprised me, saying that it would be good because it would last longer. Hmmm interesting !

Say the words "cute animals" and I would think that a large proportion of the population would think of Sylvanian Families. They have all sorts of animal figures and playsets featuring everything from pandas and koalas to corgis and racoons, but if you're after Easter-themed goodies, this Sheep Family is ideal. Kids (and big kids) of all ages love making up stories for all the Sylvanian Families animals and they always look great on the bedroom shelf when you're not playing with them too. (RRP £10.99)

Staying on the cute lamb theme, all three of the Madhouse Mini-testers loved this Jolly Sleepy Sheep from NICI, with his funny frog slippers and dangly night cap. This is the smallest size (about 12cm) and costs £10.95 but there are various other sizes available, right up to an 80cm giant with an equally impressive price tag (about £85).

Slightly less cute but probably even more popular with tweens and teens are these Angry Bird Star Wars toys. We got Darth Vader but you can also get the avian versions of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo and even a Stormtrooper. Any addicts fans of the game will love them - Madhouse Daddy Mike certainly did ! You can pick these up for about £8 which compares rather favourably to the price of a decent egg.

The next goodie that we plucked from the box was a Shoulder Buddy, which was met with squeals of excitement because we already have one of these so the Madhouse Mini-testers knew exactly what it was. For the non-initiated, you get a cute little critter, like this yellow bird with funky blue Troll-hair, that you can attach to your shoulder or the strap of your bag with a little metal disc under the fabric which "sticks" to the magnet on the underside of the Shoulder Buddy. You can read our complete review here. RRP £4.99.

Schleich are always good for plastic figures at pocket money prices and these bunny-themed figurines are ideal for Easter. Forget Mini Eggs and go for mini-rabbits instead ! The Baby Rabbits picking cabbage leaves out of their bowl are very cute and were instantly whisked away to be added to the farm animals box. They can be picked up for a few pounds

And finally, if you like puzzles, this 500 piece Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit one from Ravensburger will keep you busy for a while because it features over a hundred cute bunnies for you to piece together. It's actually a really fun puzzle to do because it's challenging enough to be interesting but simple enough if you use your observation skills to seek out each individual bunny on the picture on the lid. RRP £7.99

So what do you reckon ? Do you think your kids would prefer to receive one of these gifts or a chocolate egg? I think there would be a mutiny if we totally boycotted chocolate for Easter but it would be great to do a mixture of both because there are always way too many eggs !

Disclosure : I received a selection of Easter gifts in order to write an honest review.
