Colman's Season & Steam Mixed Herb Vegetables review

Having picked up some broccoli in our weekly veg box yesterday, and knowing that I had a few florets of cauliflower left in the fridge after making cauliflower cheese last week, it was the perfect time for trying out the sachet of Season & Steam Mixed Herb Vegetables that Colman's had sent us through to try. It suggests using 160g of cauliflower and 160g of broccoli - I had no idea how much that related to so weighed them. What you see in the photo above is the recommended quantity, but I think I could have added more and still had plenty of sauce.

This is a seasoning mix that comes with a bag to put the vegetables in that is specially designed to be used in the microwave. It has an air vent so be careful when filling the bag, because this one needs water adding to the mix. It could get messy !

I was surprised to see that the seasoning mix looked white and creamy - sure enough, glancing at the ingredients list, cream powder is the main ingredient. The mix only contains 1.2% Spices (Garlic, Pepper, Nutmeg)  and 1% Herbs (Chives, Chervil, Dill) so what you really get is a cream sauce, not a herby sauce.

It made a quick and tasty vegetable accompaniment for our roast chicken and rice and is almost like an instant cauliflower cheese. Very tasty, but not what I was expecting from "Mixed Herb Vegetables" so maybe they should think about a name change !

One serving (quarter of a 30g pack) contains 85 calories, 3g of sugar and 1g of saturated fat.

star rating : 4/5

RRP : 47p for 30g
