Tales from the Riverbank (well, pondbank actually!)

After our mammoth walk on Monday, the very next day I told the kids that we were off to see a man who would show us all the wildlife in a nature pond on the other side of town. I gave them the choice of going by bus or going for another long walk (4km each way) and was surprised - not to mention a little bit proud and impressed - when they opted for going for another walk !

If you click on the photo to make it bigger, you can play hunt the frog - I can see four but I know where they are !

I loved rediscovering newts because there used to be loads in the pond at my nan's house when I was little and every summer we'd go hunting for them and put them in a bowl (before putting them all back).

We saw three of the four types of newt that are in the pond.

There was frogspawn.

And bulrushes.

I learnt that frogs have smooth skin and toads have warty skin.

We learnt about the lifecycle of dragonflies and saw the cocoons of dragonfly larvae.

We discovered tiny fish and pond snails.

Then Pierre found a land snail to be friends with !

We finished off with a quick game of stepping stones on tree stumps before setting off for another 4km trek back home.

So 8km on top of the 9km yesterday - that's about 10 miles in 2 days, which is pretty good going for little legs !

  1. Seriously impressed with your kids stamina, sounds like you have walking with kids perfected with plenty to see and do along the way. We missed our tadpoles hatching and can't find a frog anywhere, looks like your timing was much better. Thanks for joining in with Country Kids.

    1. The impressive thing about this pond is that they haven't imported anything - it's all wildlife that has made its own way there.
