Through Blog Match, we recently received The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game to review. The Madhouse Mini-testers immediately loved the cute picture on the box, as well as the fact that the box is tree-shaped (something that I appreciated a bit less when trying to fit it in the toy cupboard after playing !) and excitedly opened it up to see what was inside.
The contents are just as appealing as the box because there are lots of little bits to fiddle with and bright colours to make it all look pretty. The game is a very simple idea. Each player takes a tree stump, which has five different coloured holes in it. You take turns spinning the spinner and, if it lands on a colour, you can take the acorn of that colour and put it in the corresponding hole on your tree trunk. The winner is the first player to collect all of the acorns and fill up their tree stump.
To make things more exciting, some triangles on the spinner have pictures - a sad squirrel means you miss a turn, an acorn with a number in it means that you can choose that number of acorns of the colour of your choice, the storm cloud means all of your acorns blow away and the thieving squirrel (who the Madhouse Mini-testers have dubbed Swiper, as in the Dora the Explorer character) means you can take an acorn from an opponent's log.
This leads to a nice mix of strategy and luck which gives players a pretty equal chance of winning. Between two and four players can play together, but Juliette even played by herself at one point, to see how quickly she could fill up her log by landing on the right colours.
It's great for practising colour recognition skills and simple counting with pre-schoolers, and trying to pick up and move acorns with the cute squirrel tongs is also a good fine motor skills workout.

It's a lovely game that kids of all ages can enjoy - the suggested age range is 3+ due to the small parts but younger players could have a go, if you keep an eye on them and help with the fiddly business of picking up the acorns. Each game only takes about 10 minutes so it's ideal for a quick play when you're short on time but the kids want some quality time with you !
