Aquarelle Watercolours Kit review

As a member of the Ravensburger Puzzle Club, I've received lots of fabulous Ravensburger puzzles to review here on the blog, but I've also learnt that Ravensburger don't only make puzzles. This Aquarelle Watercolour set, produced by Ravensburger, is a prime example of the other products that they make.

To give you an idea of the concept, imagine a painting by numbers set without the numbers. You get a selection of boards - three in our kit, featuring fairies, but there are a wide range of themes available that would appeal to kids, and even adults, of both sexes - with pictures printed on them in a kind of invisible ink that you can paint using the colours of your choice. (It actually reminds me of the magic painting you can create by drawing a picture with a candle or white wax crayon then asking young children to paint over the top with a watery wash of paint so that the picture "magically" appears.) The lines can't be painted over so it's near-on impossible to go over the lines, which results in a really pretty and impressive result that any little artist will be proud of.

The paint is liquid and comes in little bottles so you won't have to destroy your brush trying to work those rock hard solid blocks of colour that most kids' painting sets contain into a workable paint. The little tray allows you to blend the colours or add water to dilute them, using the dropper, so that you can end up with a large array of different colours and shades. As you can see in Sophie's finished design, the colours are really vibrant and those "magic" outlines make the little details really stand out, making all the difference.

If you have creative kids who are ready to branch out into a slightly more grown up painting kit, Aquarellum is the perfect way of encouraging their creativity and producing some really beautiful pictures that will almost definitely end up on their bedroom walls.
