DVD review : Playing For Keeps

The picture on the DVD case instantly sets the scene - before you even hit play, you immediately know that you are about to get a slice of classic rom-com. Female viewers will doubtless be in their element drooling over Gerard Butler, but the football element of the storyline may mean that their other halves will roll their eyes a bit less at the film choice than usual !

The film focuses on George Dryer, played by Gerard Butler, a retired football star who thinks back to the biggest relationship in his life that he messed up - the one with his son Lewis. In a bid to build some bridges with him and his ex-wife (played by Jessica Biel), he moves to Virginia and starts coaching the kids' soccer team. Things with his son are looking up, but then George's head is turned by the soccer moms who all want a slice of the good-looking new coach. Will he let his son down again or get his act together and be the dad he deserves?

The star-studded cast list is impressive - as well as Gerard Butler and Jessica Biel, it features Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Dennis Quaid and Judy Greer. I don't think it's an award-winner but it is a nice feel-good movie perfect for an evening's entertainment when you don't want anything too taxing.
