Ravensburger board game review: Indigo

Indigo is a board game that none of us had heard of before so we were keen to see what we would think. It's a game for 2-4 players and the suggested age range is 8+. I'd say this is quite accurate.

The board opens out to reveal a big honeycomb of interlocking hexagons, including a few blue ones. These are the treasure squares and the girls oohed and aahed at the "flat marbles" as they called them, representing sapphires, amber and emeralds. The very thorough instruction manual (with all the rules in several languages) explains which jewels to place on which hexagons at the beginning of the game. The orange sections on the sides are doors which allow you to get the jewels out and the white circles are for placing coloured tokens to show which door belongs to which player.

It all sounds quite complicated when you're first setting up the game and reading out the instructions but it's fairly simple one you've actually started playing. You deal out the hexagonal cards which have different pathways on them. You need to place the cards in one of the hexagons on the board whichever way round you want to start or continue a pathway. Rather like snakes and ladders, you slide the jewels down the pathway that you've created with the hope that you will move them towards one of your doorways. It's easier said than done because joining up several sections of existing pathway means that you don't really have a clue where the jewel will end up once you start sliding !

This mixture of strategy and pot luck help to even up the odds when playing with younger players so it's a great family game that players of all ages will enjoy. I'm sure we'll get better at the strategy side of things the more we play but the girls already think it's a fun and exciting game.
