Schwartz Grill Mates Deep South Brown Sugar Marinade Mix review


After being so impressed with their Mojito Lime Marinade Mix, I decided to try out another of the Schwartz Grill Mates range and this time opted for Deep South Brown Sugar Marinade Mix. This sounded ideal for adding some pizazz to beef, chicken or pork so I rummaged through the freezer and came up with some faux filet.


The marinade mix is a blend of Salt, Brown Sugar (18%), Tomato Powder, Modified Maize Starch, Sugar, Dried Garlic, Cayenne Pepper, Dried Onion, Honey Powder, Black Pepper, Flavourings (contains Mustard), Red Bell Peppers, Parsley, Vegetable Oil, Cumin, Anti-caking Agent (Calcium Silicate), Oregano, Colour (Paprika Extract).


I followed the instructions and mixed the pack contents with 50ml oil, 2 tbsp orange juice and 2 tbsp white wine vinegar which sounded like a strange combination, but it does really work. The pack even suggests trying a Tennessee Shot Marinade by replacing the orange juice with 3tbsp Tennessee whisky, which is definitely something I might try out in the summer at an adut barbecue.


I left the meat to marinate for an hour in the fridge. The spices gave it a wonderful colour and lovely sweet but smoky aroma.


I served it with some garlic mash and salad and it was really tasty, although nobody expected it to have quite so much of a kick ! I fried the beef in a frying pan but these marinade mixes would be brilliant on a proper barbecue too in the summer months.

The 35g pack contains 120 calories, 25.2g of carbs (of which 8.5g sugar), 0.8g of fat (of which 0.1g saturates), 2.9g of fibre and 3.9g of sodium.
