Walkers Hoops and Crosses review

Last week, the postie dropped off a package containing a rather cute monkey clutching a bag of Walkers newest product, Baked Hoops and Crosses. Pierre immediately adopted the monkey and the girls swiped the bag of crisps !

Well, I soon swiped it back and shared them all out fairly ! As the name suggests, the crisps (for want of a better word) are shaped as circles or crosses so we couldn't resist playing noughts and crosses with them - the winner of each game won a crisp !

Flavour and texture wise, they really reminded me of the beef flavoured Monster Munch I used to eat in my youth. They have a strong meaty flavour but are in fact suitable for vegetarians, as are the other varieties - prawn cocktail and salt & vinegar. What I really love is that they are baked rather than fried and each bag only contains 85 calories. We split our bag three ways and still got a reasonable and satisfying handful each for a measly 30 calories each which is fabulous - guilt-free crisp snacking even if I'm trying to lose weight ! They have no artificial colours or preservatives and are also made from wholegrains, which makes them healthier.

Each 18g bag contains 3.8g of fat (of which 0.3g saturates), 1g of sugar and 0.27g of salt. That's about a third less fat than a regular bag of fried crisps. I'll definitely be looking out for the other flavours to try - hopefully there's a multipack available because the Madhouse Mini-testers have already asked if they can have them again. Knowing they're baked, wholegrain and relatively low in calories means I'd feel much happier giving these to the kids than regular crisps.
