Oloves Olives review

Oloves sent me a tweet recently to ask if we'd like to try out some of their olives. We all love olives here at The Madhouse, especially as they remind us of our holidays in Turkey and Tunisia, so I replied with a very enthusiastic yes please ! The postie soon dropped off three little sachets of Oloves flavoured green olives.

The first sachet was Lemony Lover, flavoured with lemon and garlic. These had a subtle citrus flavour that complemented the slightly tart flavour of the olives perfectly.

Next was Tasty Mediterranean with Basil & Garlic. These compared nicely with the flavoured olives that we sometimes buy from the farmers' markets in France. The herbs add a subtle backnote without overpowering the taste of the olives.

And finally, we sampled Hot Chilli Mama. I didn't actually find these very spicy at all and thought they tasted citrussy (in fact, I thought I'd taken another Lemony Lover one to begin with !). On closer inspection, they contain habanero chillies but also lemon pieces, so I wasn't going mad. The Madhouse Mini-testers found these a bit too spicy but both me and Madhouse Daddy thought they were very tame.

All three varieties are very nice, perfectly juicy and there were no missed stones that sneaked through as sometimes happens, almost resulting in a broken tooth as you unsuspectingly bite hard into a supposedly pitted olive ! The pouches aren't full of oil or water so there are no nasty surprises when you rip them open and they're ideal as a diet-friendly snack because each little pouch contains just 50 calories (for about a dozen olives). They're suitable for vegetarians and vegans, are Kosher approved and are free from gluten, wheat, dairy and nuts.

star rating : 4.5/5
