In Craig Robertson's latest release, Witness The Dead, we catch up with slightly-creepy-but-generally-nice-guy Tony Winter, the criminal photographer who enjoys photographing victims of violent crime just a little too much, and his former girlfriend, DS Rachel Narey, but, unlike previous episodes in the series, this novel doesn't really give us any new insight into their lives or complicated relationship. It does have a cracking plotline though.
Glasgow has a new serial killer on its streets and ex-cop Danny Nielson, Tony Winter's uncle, is sure he recognises echoes of a past serial killer, The Red Silk, that were never released to the public. It can't be him because he is still locked up in prison but Danny is sure there must be a link. When the police won't listen to him, he takes matters into his own hands, setting up a prison visit with the vicious murderer and dragging Tony along with him to see what they can find out. This doesn't go down at all well with the police and they end up becoming pawns in the manipulative serial killer's game.
It's a gripping plotline but I must admit, I did work it out before I got to the end. I enjoyed the banter between colleagues and the powerplay between the different cops was interesting. The only thing that I thought was slightly lacking was moving DS Narey and Tony Winter's story on a bit further because they just seemed to have bit-parts in this episode really.
