Bisto Midweek Meal Challenge recipe #3 : Toad In The Hole With A Twist

I've been cooking lots of exotic dishes lately, but it's always nice to "come home" again and knock up some traditional English grub. I decided to try out another of the Bisto recipe suggestions last week and see how their Toad In The Hole With A Twist would turn out.

Toad In The Hole With A Twist

Serves 4
Prep time : 15 mins
Cooking time : 25 mins

- 4 tbsp vegetable oil
- 6 pork sausages
- 110g plain flour
- 1 large egg
- 300ml (1/2 pint) milk
- 4 spring onions, finely chopped
- 2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh rosemary or thyme
- 4 heaped teaspoons Bisto Onion Gravy Granules
- Salt & freshly ground pepper

1. Preheat the oven to 220°C/gas mark 7.

2. Put a teaspoon of vegetable oil into a baking dish (metal ones are better for batter). Put all six sausages in, then bake for 6-7 minutes while you make the batter.

3. Put the flour, eggs and milk into a large mixing bowl and add a pinch of salt. Beat with a whisk to make a smooth batter, then add the spring onions and rosemary or thyme. (You could make the batter in a blender or food processor if you prefer.)

4. Pour or ladle the batter into the piping hot baking tin, returning it to the oven as quickly as possible for best results. Bake for 22-25 minutes, until the batter is puffed up and golden brown.

5. Just before serving, make the gravy. Sprinkle 4 teaspoons of Bisto Onion gravy granules in a jug and add 280ml (1/2 a pint) boiling water, stirring until thickened and smooth.

6. Serve and enjoy.

We served ours with corn on the cob and carrots and everyone loved it - although the kids still want to know how it got the name toad in the hole ! I'd never actually made gravy in a jug just by pouring on boiling water - I usually add gravy granules to the cooking juices from the roast then top it up with water - but it was lovely -really thick and so quick and simple. It made me wonder why I bother with all the usual faffing around !

Disclosure : I received some Bisto gravy granules and recipe cards, as well as a shopping voucher to buy the extra ingredients.

    1. I don't usually either but it does go really well, especially the onion gravy.

  2. Toad in the Hole should always be served with mash and gravy along with your choice of veg, Toad in the Hole is never served without gravy. Also, the batter is suppose to rise the ones in the pictures clearly did not.........
