Calvin Innes toddler books review

You may remember that earlier in the year, I reviewed a series of Tiny Twisted Tales by Calvin Innes (click through to see what we thought of those), and we discovered his slightly revolting but very funny sense of humour. This time, it was Pierre's turn to be enchanted by his weird and wacky illustrations in a trio of books for toddlers, collectively labelled "a monstrously fun way to learn".

The first title was The Monster Book Of Colours which introduced us to a whole group of funny monsters with weird and wonderful names, such as Fuzzblot, Noop-Noop, Twiddlypuff and Chubba.

Pierre enjoyed looking at the pictures and naming the colours, whereas Juliette liked sounding out the words and reading the silly names.

The second book, The Monster Book Of Numbers, continues on the cute, colourful monster theme and this time gives little learners the chance to count from 1 -10, but then also to 15, 20, 25 and finally 50, much to Pierre and Juliette's delight !

The third book, Where's The Scone?, is illustrated by Calvin Innes but written by Beth Dexter-Smith, Now, I messed this up right from the outset because I ummed and aahed and decided to pronounce scone as a Southerner, rhyming it with « throne ». I warn you now, at the end of the story, it needs to rhyme with « gone » ! The book gives you another opportunity to count things, as well as giggle at the silly scenarios such as bream licking ice cream and gnu tasting tofu. The funny rhymes make it all a lot of fun - the biggest giggle from us was for the yetis sucking spaghetti ! We aso loved the final page which sends you on a treasure hunt, searching for little objects throughout the book.

They're fun, educational reads to share with your child and the brightly coloured, appealing illustrations will encourage them to look through them by themselves, even if they can't yet read the words.

Star rating : 4/5

RRP : £4.99 each

Disclosure : I received review copies of the books.
